When this guy was first brought up, I didn't take him seriously at all. I figured there had to be some reason why he had spent 11 years in the minors. But I'll be honest, this guy is really impressing me. He just won't stop hitting. I'm watching the game right now and I just watched him hit a big 2-run double after working a 3-0 count... and I didn't realize it but he's hit in every single game he's batted in. Are we gonna be able to keep this guy on the roster?

isn't miles our only back up short stop, or can scales play short as well?

Bobby Scales can do absolutely anything he wants to, so probably.

Aaron Miles can't play shortstop, and Bobby Scales probably can't either.

Scales obviously won't keep this up, but he's done a nice job of working counts and turning on pitches to hit. I wonder how well he handles the inside pitch, it almost seems as if he crowds the plate hoping for a pitch on the outer half he can hook into right field.

Am I missing something here?

Seeing as how you registered a few days ago, yes. Yes you are missing something. Just go with it, and ride the wave of greatness that is...

jack cust didn't get a real chance in the big leagues until he was 28. some guys just get type cast as AAA players and never really get their shot at the bigs. scales isn't good, but PECOTA projects him at a .245 EqA, which isn't awful and is better than miles' projection. i'd give him more playing time at 3B than miles, that's for sure.

Yeah, and Miles can also pitch.

I don't expect it to last that long. But this is the kinda thing that happens for good teams. They get unexpected performance from guys out of nowhere and it helps them have a winning record. Hopefully Randy Wells can do the same for us out of the bullpen.

I dont know. Im not saying hes going to keep up this pace, but hes a veteran. Hes clawed his way this far, and hes going to do everything he can to stay. Thats mare than I can say for Aaron Miles. Weve seen his ceiling, and its nowhere near impressive. Even if Scales can hit .280 and OPS in the low-mid .700s, hes an upgrade over Miles and maybe Freel.

I'm fine with riding players like him our as long as they are cheap.

I'd sign 5 Bobby Scale's every year to minor league deals and hope one of them can perform as good as Miles and save myself the million or two million dollars.

I could have told you during the off season that you could have gotten just as much production out of Bobby Scales and Sam Fuld as you would out of Aaron Miles and Joey Gathright.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

He's in good form. It will end.

Is this a Meph riddle?

It's a phrase soccer players/coaches/analysts use to talk about a player on a hot streak who's otherwise subpar.

Well I couldn't have told you those two specifically, but yes.

A good example is Bako-Hill. Even if Bako was 80 points better on OPS (and he probably isn't even that), I'd rather save that few hundred grand or whatever it is. In Miles' case you're talking about millions. Take the ~600K from a Gathright and a Bako, the million or so from a Miles and so forth, and add it all up and you can keep an actually valuable player, like DeRosa.

Anyone else find it ironic that a 32 year old minor league journeyman making his major league debut for Aramis has us missing Aramis's defense, and not his bat?

there was a middle infielder who once put up a .369/.397/.554 line in his 1st 130 at bats for the cubs. we all learned to hate him eventually.

let's not get too excited just yet.

Was this Neifi? If so I think most people hated that Dusty started him all the time for the most part.

I can't imagine anyone here is looking at him as more than a decent bench/backup option.
