The fun with minor league baseball. Castro steals 2nd for Daytona and advances to 3rd on an error. That's not a huge deal...except the error was on the SS who threw the ball wildly back to the pitcher after the base was stolen.

Mixed bag for Cashner. 2.2 IP, 5 H(all 1B), 2 ER, 4/1 K/BB, WP, 2 HBP

Pretty solid outing for Jackson. 6 IP, 5 H(1 2B), 2 ER, 5/2 K/BB. He's only at 87 pitches so he may come out for the 7th.

Also for Tennessee, Thomas is 1 for 2 with a walk, and Smith is 2 for 3 with a double and K.

How long until Cashner is placed into the pen as a closer? I'm pretty sure the only reason why he is in the rotation at Daytona is to build up his arm strength, and possible work on some secondary pitches... I don't think he "projects" as a starting pitcer, but who knows I guess?

Probable Starters:

Iowa: LHP JR Mathes (4-3, 3.81 ERA, 26 IP, 9 K/1 BB)

Tennessee: RHP Jay Jackson (2-3, 4.94 ERA, 27.1 IP, 26 K/11 BB)

Daytona: RHP Andrew Cashner (0-0, 1.00 ERA, 9 IP, 6 K/5 BB)

Peoria: RHP Chris Carpenter (1-2, 2.97 ERA, 30.1 IP, 33 K/16 BB)

LH Jeff Beliveau starting tonight...IF we play.

Looks like the worst has passed through (and what a storm it was!), but there's another system making its way through the State as we speak. The weather might be acceptable tonight, but the field is likely to be a mess with all the rain we've had.

Hopefully all of this year. He needs to work on those secondary pitches and also work on his control.

And I haven't given up hope that he might stick as a starter though he's eventually going to have to get into the 4th inning for that to happen.

I'll update Peoria's starter.

So, the only people who didn't get multiple hits for Iowa today were the pitchers (JR Mathes had 1, Jesse Estrada had none) and Brad Snyder.

That looked like a great game to bolster your own stats.

That is Jackson's final line, as he gives way to Cales, who mows down the side by striking out two and getting a groundout to 1B.

I went to Tennesee game today, Jackson started out pretty good first two innings, rough 3rd, good final three.

Cales came in the 7th struck out two, he has a slider that might be the best one I have seen in AA, its filthy. This guy was drafted last year and could make it to AAA by the end of the season!!! or should I even mention September??

Gaub came with runners on 2nd and 3rd and struck out 2 to get out of the inning. Bring up Gaub, get rid of Cotts

Shlitter came in and gave up a hit then a walk and got a dp to end the game.

Cashner is really wild. Last year he walked more a batter per inning (as a pro; he hadn't been equally wild in college). This year he's still really wild; I don't know where they record how many guys he's hit, but when you sum up walks, wild pitches, and HBP, he's averaging more than a wild-event per inning. And the extraordinary wildness is also why he's exhausting his pitch count within 2 or 3 innings.

That kind of wildness doesn't play in either rotation or relief. He's in a minor-league rotation to pitch and try to get a hint of control. How much control he develops will dictate how far he goes and in what role he pitches, if he ever gets enough to pitch productively in the majors.

You get a chance to see radar guns for these guys?

Also, any thoughts on the position players down there (Thomas, Barney, Clevenger, Guyer, Wright, etc.)?

Didnt see any times on those guys but Cales REALLY impressed me. Jackson looks like a promising starter if he keeps at it and Gaub looks like he's ML ready.

Thomas had a solid hit to lead of the game but gets fooled on offspeed stuff sometimes

Barney didnt have a good game walked once and scored thats about it. Doesnt put effort into defense

Clevenger looked OK behind the plate kind of reminds me of kendall

Guyer went 0-3 and left 4 men on i think

Wright can really hit the ball

Adduci looks like he can be a good ball player also

Jae-Hoon Ha with a great game:

Arizona Phil @ TCR[/url]"]CF Jae-Hoon Ha had three hits, scored three runs, and made three circus catches in the outfield, leading the EXST Cubs to a 13-5 drubbing of the EXST A's at the Oakland A's Minor League Complex at Papago Park in Phoenix this morning.

The 18-year old Ha singled and scored in the 1st, 5th, and 7th, and made a sliding catch in left-center in the 3rd, a dip-glove knee-high running catch in right-center in the 5th, and a leaping over-the-shoulder catch at the centerfield fence that took away a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th. (On the latter play, Ha received a 9.9 from all the judges except the one from North Korea, who inexplicably gave him a 2.5).

Watkins and Cerda also looked good with the bat.

Just a thought - If he's working on his secondary pitches, his problems with control could be due to that. Having no pitching experience myself, if someone asked me to come out and throw a forkball every third pitch every game, I would consider myself lucky if the catcher was even able to get a glove on it! Since his history indicates that his control has been fine, I have a tendency not to panic. I will assume that the Cubs brass will eventually have him scrap any pitches that he is just not getting the hang of. I think most pitchers work on those pitches in EST, but with him being such a high draft pick and an older player, I imagine there is some pressure to have him pitch in full-season ball. Just my two cents.

I'm not really that worried either but he's likely working on his slider and change. Without the slider, he won't have much big league success even as a reliever and his slider is his out pitch. And without that change, he's going to have a tougher time being a starter.
