Id like to think that Stevens up, Patton gone isnt too far behind, but after kicking both Gaudin and Vizcaino to the curb in his favor they're going to ride him out to the bitter end out of principle.

You keep talking about bringing Stevens up, and I have no clue why. What part of his 13ip and 7 walks do you think Lou is going to like? He has command issues, and we have enough of that already in our bullpen.

My philospophy is I prefer the guy who has yet to prove he can do the job over the guy who has proved he cant.

Stevens has proven throughout his minor league career he struggles with command. Him coming to the majors, with more patient hitters, and you think things will be different for him? Stevens is not the answer right now.

I would like to see Ascanio given the same treatment that Samardzija should get, remaining in the rotation so he can work on refining his stuff, and to see for sure if he is a starter or reliever at the major league level. Especially when someone like Stevens is available to fill that need in the pen.

I've been waiting for the moment that he earns the nickname "Gascanio" for quite some time.

Why are you guys so hype about Ascanio?

Why wouldn't we? Ascanio is only 24, has always had great stuff, and went from putting up decent numbers in the pen in AAA last year to putting up tremendous numbers in the rotation in AAA this year.

A 5.10 era and 1.41 whip (2008) is 'decent'?

I think he needs some more time in the minors, is all.

Yes. He had a good K rate and K/BB, his main problem was a flukish amount of HR, which was way out of line with anything he's done before or since that season at Iowa.

I agree with keeping him at Iowa to develop stamina and refine his stuff, like I said earlier in the thread.

Look at his 2008 stats before and after his brother died. The huge drop off might be explained by that.

Pretty brutal outing today. Back to back hit batters on his first pitches? Come on.

he settled in pretty well after that - he only threw 7 balls in 24 pitches, but 2 of them hit batters and another was a wild pitch. it was a really weird outing, for sure.

I was pretty impressed with how he had an awful first inning, but then came back and shut them down in the second inning.

I'm liking Ascanio.

Yeah, it was an unfortunately horrendous way to start, but I think he can be a really useful part of the bullpen. A trio of Marmol, Guzman and Ascanio on their game would be nasty.

I really like the sound of that.
