Black said the Chicago Cubs, a team Maddux pitched twice for in his career, also offered a similar deal to the 42-year-old, but he chose the Padres.

So, Greg chose working with the Padres over the Cubs....

Wasn't there some rumors that he and Larry don't exactly see eye-to-eye?

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing something about him wanting to stay on the West Coast during his last few years as a player.

If he's only with the team for the spring, why would the geography matter?

I missed the "Spring" part. Yeah, that wouldn't matter then.

You have to admit that is rather interesting...

Maybe it's a matter of where he felt he would be able to actually do the most instructing. The Cubs' pitching staff is comprised of veterans and guys who are young but not so young as to be completely green, and they've got a stud catcher by the name of Geo to put down the right fingers at the right time (who just happens to be a protégé of one of the game's smartest catchers who himself was one of Maddux's personal catchers at one time).

The Padres' staff, save for Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Heath Bell, is more or less the opposite in every way. It's a staff of unknowns and rookies from which the Padres hope to cobble together a passable rotation and bullpen and their no. 1 catcher has all of 59 major league games behind the plate. This is the sort of staff with which Maddux (and Blanco, to an extent) can do a lot more teaching.

I'm still not convinced Maddux will be all that great as a pitching coach.

"Now, what you want to do on a 1-1 count to this hitter is throw a four-seamer exactly 1.72 inches off the outside corner. He'll foul it off, but now you've got him set up to throw the next one 1.78 inches off the outside corner and he'll ground it to second."

Well hell, then offer him more money. Offer him more incentives. The only uniform Mad Dog should be wearin is a Cub uni.

I think if Maddux chose to come back, I think he would be an effective middle (long) reliever.

Greg Maddux making younger pitchers better has to be one of most persistent myths in baseball. They said it for every time he went to after the Braves, yet I never saw it happen.

How long did Paul Molitor last as a batting coach? I thought he was fired after like 1 season.
