Lou says he may move Soriano down in the lineup.

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2009/02/piniella-may-move-soriano-from-leadoff-spot.html

Why now?

“You know what, I’d rather do it now than have it done sometime and I have to explain it all over again,” he said.

Clear as mud, Lou.

Piniella mentioned Aaron Miles, Ryan Theriot, Kosuke Fukudome and “little (Mike) Fontenot” as potential leadoff hitters in place of Soriano. Then he hedged, saying Soriano is “basically” still his leadoff man.

Oh yeah...that's gonna work out greaaaaat.

EDIT: Changed the subject for ease of reference.

I was going to question the use of the term "play" instead of "bat" or "hit".

Was just having some fun...I'll change it if it's too much of a nuisance...:P

Threw up a little at the Miles reference.

If not Soriano, I'd go with Fukudome. That's assuming he doesn't start off 2009 the way he ended 2008. Other than him, I'd probably just stick with Soriano. Fontenot may be a dark horse, but he's probably not a great option.

At this point, I'd probably just keep Soriano there and run with this:

Soriano

Fukudome

Ramirez

Bradley

Lee

Soto

Fontenot

Theriot

ETA: The more I think about it, if Fukudome does fall on his face, I'd move him down to 8th and bump Bradley up to 2nd. Might as well give the best hitters the most chances.

I like the idea of a good Fukudome up there in leadoff or #2....but my fear of bad Fukudome is keeping me from pulling that mental trigger.

i edited after you quoted me to say that if he fails move him down to 8th and put Bradley in the 2-hole.

really, i'd just like to see the most productive hitters get the most PAs for the most part.

Soto

Ramirez

Lee

Fukudome

Fontenot

Theriot

Right, Lou would never do that but I'd probably be cool with it.

Fukudome bouncing back would really be huge for this offense.

While we dont have a leadoff man in the traditiional sense of the word, Theriot, Fontenot, or Kosuke at leadoff would be worth it to have

Theriot/Font/Fuku

Theriot/Font/Fuku

Bradley

Ramirez

Soriano

Lee

Soto

Theriot Font/Fuku

Now thats purdy.

Of course, it wont happen, and Soriano will be back at leadoff.

Soriano

Theriot/Font

Lee

Ramirez

Bradley

Soto

Theriot/Font

Fuku

Is the more likely opening day lineup.

There's been a lot of speculation about where Soriano will hit this year in the Cubs line-up. While Lou's comments don't indicate completely that Soriano will be out of the lead-off spot, there's some indication that he'll experiment with line-ups that have Soriano somewhere other than leading off.

Link.

"We've got a combination of Derrek, Bradley, Ramirez," Piniella began. "You know, I'm not going to (rule) out the possibility of throwing Soriano into that mix, too. We'll see how it works out. We can play around with that this spring."

"We're going to try it a little bit and see," Piniella said of Soriano hitting somewhere in the middle. "I talked to Soriano at the (Cubs) convention. He said, 'Lou, you can do whatever you want.' So, we'll see.

"To me, he's still my leadoff hitter. I love him in the leadoff spot. I like him in the leadoff spot. We can see how it looks. We've got plenty of time in the spring to see where things shake out."

and who would take Alfonso's place at the top?

If Soriano doesn't lead off, Piniella ticked off his options, with one possible surprise.

"We've got (Aaron) Miles that could lead off. If we have to, we've got (Ryan) Theriot. We've got little (Mike) Fontenot if we have to.

"(Kosuke) Fukudome. Let's see if he comes back and swings the bat like he was earlier in the year, and there's another candidate."

I didn't see your thread, Banedon. I'm going to merge the one I just started with yours.

you saw it, admit it. you just wanted to try out your new powers

I'm actually having trouble doing what I want...so I'm really showing off my lack of mod powers.

Thanks for the link. I posed the question today, and Lou made it interesting, as usual. Expect things to change, though, about 876 times.

It sounds like it already kinda changed in there once after he recited his list of options and kinda wasn't impressed...heh.

How's the weather? *sigh*
