maybe I am just miss remembering but wasn't he drafted as a shortstop not a pitcher?

yeah, ahead of verlander among others

i mean, it wasn't a great draft overall, but when are teams going to learn that they need to just pony up the $, this signability stuff at the top of round 1 annoys me to no end

it's terrible. i don't know why teams go for slot money to avoid the "wrath" of mlb - it's not like mlb can contract your franchise or take players away from you because you spent an extra mil on your first round draft pick. the pirates took daniel moskos ahead of matt wieters purely because of signability. they saved $3.5M and probably have a guy who won't make the major leagues instead of a guy who will be one of the best catchers in baseball for the next few years, at a reasonable price.

if i was the gm of a bad small-market franchise, i'd spend less than almost anybody in free agency and be one of the highest-spending franchises in the draft and prospect development internationally. and i'd tell bud selig to blow the slot recommendations out his ass.

Worked out pretty well for the Twins.

Just cause he was out for a season having a tommy john surgery doesn't mean he was a pitcher...

but he was

He was, though. They moved him to pitcher to see if he was worth a hoot there.

They said and still say that Bush was at the top of their board regardless of cost. I have my doubts.

Above Stephen Drew and Jered Weaver? That's laughable.

They took Bush because they knew the local high school boy would sign. But, how much difference in money is there really between what Bush got and what a top rated college player would get with the first overall pick. And I wonder if they still think it was worth it? His wiki page makes him look like the worst #1 pick in the history of the game, which then makes San Diego own the worst of all time in baseball and football (Ryan Leif).

Not that Ryan Leaf was a good pick, but I'm pretty sure he was the second overall pick not the #1 pick.

Yeah, you got me there. However, he was the 2nd pick to some guy no one has ever heard of. :)

Not to defend Ryan Leaf or anything but he had all the physical tools to be a successful player in the NFL he just turned out to be a moron. He is a large reason they have huge psych evaluations for players specially quarterbacks now. He was truly the consensus #2 player behind Peyton Manning. SD just got unlucky and well maybe should have done a little more evaluations outside of the football field.

yeah but ability to think is really, really important when you play quarterback. they should have been doing those evaluations on qb's all along. if you're drafting a qb just because he's big and throws the ball hard, you're a moron. you can have a dunce at running back - just turn around, give him the ball and watch him run. but i think people knew back in the '90s that decision-making was an important quality for a quarterback to possess.

While I agree, in a sense, with what you are saying, mostly picks are judged based on how they perform, and Ryan Leaf's performance in San Diego was beyond ridiculous.

They were both hugely wasted picks, even if Matt Bush was not a celebrated high caliber prospect, while Ryan Leaf was.

Didn't Ryan Leaf show up to training camp having not thrown a single football (or worked out) since the combine?

According to mlbtraderumors, the Blue Jays have released Matt Bush.

According to Robert MacLeod of The Globe and Mail, the Blue Jays released pitcher Matt Bush today. The Jays picked up Bush from the Padres this winter, and he quickly violated their zero tolerance policy with some kind of bad behavior.

Taylor at least had some minor league success for a couple years before screwing up his career. Bush completely failed as a hitter and looked good for a whopping 7.2 innings as a pitcher.

True, but ALL THAT HYPE considering he was a Yankees draft pick can't be overlook. I always enjoy a good Yankees prospect who is/was an epic failure. I never liked the Matt Bush pick, and I felt he wasn't a Top 3 Rounds draft pick anyways. Padres only took because of their cheapness and the fact he was a local boy.
