It's nice that it's short, but damn, 18M is way too much for him.

Personally I think that whopping 5.4 WARP3 that he brought to the Phils last year is worth 18m per...

Yeah, it's the WARP3, plus other little minuscule unimportant details like averaging 50HR, 140 RBI, .280/.380/.590 over the first three full seasons of his career. Edited by The Other 15%

so is Adam Dunn worth $18M?

if doing nothing but clobbering homers is worth $18M, then a guy like Pujols is worth $40M

I don't know, but I do know that .240/380/.520 should not be confused as .280/.380/.590.

His overall numbers end up looking pretty good, but he was awful for almost half the season last year.

yeah i don't know that he can repeat his 2006 season but even if he puts up 2007 numbers he'll be worth the money. he wasn't that good last year, counting stats aside.

I don't know if Howard is going to be a .280 hitter from here on out though. All his numberes, especially his average, have been declining pretty significantly over the last season. I wouldn't be surprsied if he ends up as an Adam Dunn type with a low average like last year.

I guess the Phillies thought they were going to lose their arbitration case ($14M vs $18M I think). I think $18M/year is way too much for Howard. The career .279/.380/.590 line looks good, but he's declined significantly over each of the past two years and he's already going to be 29. His OPS+ was only 124 last year, which is the same as Joey Votto, and 7 points less than Mike Fontenot. Add in his poor fielding and I don't think he should get close to $18M until he proves he can produce at his 2006/2007 levels, which I doubt.

At first I did a double-take because, damn, that's a lot of money. But really, it might just be overpaying by just a few million a year, and it's better to overspend $4 million a season for three years than pay him 14 million per over 7 or whatever.

What I'm trying to say is it's worth it to overpay for three years instead of pay him his actual value for seven. I'd rather have given Soriano 20 million a year for 3 years than 17 for 8 or whatever it was. If that's what it took to keep the years down, it was probably worth it.

He had a horrible first half then followed it up with a great second half. It's the same thing he's done throughout his short career (although his 2006 "horrible first half" was only so in comparison to his second half). Another guy just got $22 mil a year for eight years with the same inconsistency.

that's probably a fair deal. they're smart to not go beyond three years; he's a guy who will not age well.

I think the smart thing was to not give him a lot of trade protection. Face it, whether hes worth it or not (which he isn't), he was probably going to get more than that going year to year in arbi because he puts up HRs and RBIs and arbitrators don't understand positional adjustments and replacement level. I'd say if this is the bottom of the market, the Phils trade him before the contract is up.

I wonder if he'll even be able to bend over and field a ground ball at the end of this deal

???

why wouldn't he be?

Because he's a fat guy with old player skills.

As silly as that statement is, if ever a guy is allowed to be useless in the field its one that puts up those kinds of numbers.

What's so silly about it? He's doesn't have a position on an NL team.
