If we do move DeRosa in this deal, I would like to see Font start at second, however, we will need another middle infielder as a back up, as nobody on the current roster can play it, and theres really nobody down on the farm. Heres a list of possibles

-Rafeal Furcal-if we land Peavy, and that LH outfielder, theres no way wed be able to afford him

-Orlando Hudson-see above

-Ray Durham-old, injury prone, but productive

-Grudz-aging, but still usefull

-Omar Vizquel-at the age of 67, hes still one of the better defenisive short stops in the game, but his once mediocre offensive skills are now putrid at best.

-Damian Easley-if hed be cheap, hed be worth a look see

-Juan Uribe-the best that can be said about him is that he might be slightly better than Neifi.

-Alex Cintron-been there, done that. Maybe it will work this time

-Craig Counsell-see Grudz, plus can play all 3 IF spots

-David Eckstein-again, oldy but can still play. kind of.

-Nick Punto-I didnt even realise he was a FA, but if he was cheap, Id be all over him.

The top two are starters who are probably better than Fontenot. Plus they would never sign to be a backup.

Obviously, either of them would start, with Font and Theriot taking turns starting. Most of the others would be as backups, with the possible exceptions of Durham and Punto who would platoon. OK, same is pretty much true for a lot of these guys.

I guess I should have said additional infielder of some sort.

Ah I took it as these are the possible backups for Fontenot. I would say Grudz is at least a platoon as well and probably a starter if signed.

I would never ever ever want to see Craig Counsell bat for the Cubs. I would turn the channel every time he came up to bat. Not just because of his batting stance but also because I know it would result in an out.

The thing about Counsell is, while his stats suck, he one of those guys that every time you turn around, he seems to come up with tsome kind of clutch hit. Maybe its just us, or maybe Im just imagining it because Ive seen it happen a handful of times.

Losing DeRosa would give us less than 5 guys on the roster that can play 2b, and we can't have that.

I'm not arguing the need for a platoon mate, I think it's the right way to go. I'm not banking on Fontenot hitting the way he did last year in an everyday role. But it is still funny nonetheless that we're looking at 2bs when we have 5 guys on our roster that can play 2b if needed right now.

Derosa, Theriot, Fontenot and Cedeno can play 2nd base. Whose the 5th? Soriano? I don't really believe anyone sees him as a 2nd baseman anymore. Since one of the above has to play SS, that leaves 2 guys (Cedeno & Fontenot) if Derosa gets traded. That's not exactly a glut of MIs.

Seems pretty likely to me that if DeRosa goes, Cedeno will be staying.

And actually it seems like SD isn't particularly interested in Cedeno to begin with.

So there's your backup MI right there.

You're exactly right. That's why I think it's the right way to go, but it's still funny that we might be looking for another 2b. It's kind of piggybacking on the jokes from last offseason about fielding an entire team of 2bmen.

Fontenot can play 3B too if you want a bigger bat than Cedeno.

Who is playing 2nd when that happens?

Depends on who else is on the roster.

Ahh. It's probably a safe bet that there will be another middle infielder on the roster. But, the pickings are getting slim.
