I've never been one to shy away from a dumb question, and I'm not about to start now.

What's the story with "bullpen catchers"? It's obvious from their title what they do, but who are they? Are they major league players who didn't make it with any team? Are they minor league players? And how do they become "bullpen catchers"? :?: :?: :?:

Thanks in advance.

I actually talked to two of the bullpen catchers last year and i know one of them used to be a pitcher in the A's system who never really panned out and, he said he wanted to stay in baseball so he decided to take the job as a bullpen catcher.

It's a pretty darn good job is you ask me. How much do they make?

Unknown.

But they get transported all around the country with a major league team and all that jazz. Plus they pitch batting practice on occasion, so that's got to be a pretty sweet job too. I'd do it for free. You know, if I could find some other way to actually make money enough to support myself.

But they also get 95+ MPH fastballs fired at them and get cup-checked by curveballs. No thanks.

Plus, when Kerry Wood was throwing his simulated innings last year they were the ones batting against him. I wouldnt want to step into the box against him, no way.

The Cubs had two bullpen catchers the last few years, Edgar Tovar and Kelly Miller. Tovar was a minor lge infielder and Miller was a pitcher.

Your telling me you would not take a couple swings against Kerry Wood if you had a chance?

Corey Miller, not kelly.

And yes, Miller was a pitcher in the a's system.

I don't know if i could stand that close to the plate while he threw a 97 mph fast ball at me. I'd probably dive out of the way.
