Maddux is by far the best pitcher in the last 20 years.

Maddux is my favorite player of all time. But Pedro is the best pitcher in the last 20 years. Certainly when he was on the mound. Greg might have him beat in total value because of durability, I guess. Pedro has a strong argument for best pitcher ever for when he was on the mound, though.

I agree. It's the longevity/consistency vs. "peak" argument.

What's the latest on Glavine and Smoltz? Glavine I would imagine is a lock for the HOF now that he has 300 wins, and Smoltz has a pretty strong candidacy as well. It would be cool if all three went in together five years from now.

Glavine is probably done.

Smoltz plans to pitch next year.

an era at 2 for 1,000 innings? Pedro is not that good.

Glavine, it's a toss up, and Smoltz, I believe has said he wants to pitch next yr.

I'd put Pedro's 1997-2003 against it

AFL is not far from Vegas.

Maddux is by far the best pitcher in the last 20 years.

What would it take for him to go in as a Cub? I think its a closer argument then I first realized considering he pitched a total of 9 seasons with the Cubs and 11 in Atl.

What would it take to have his number on the foul pole?

Answer to both questions is, not gonna happen. He was always quality with the Cubs, but without a doubt his greatest years (to include WS ring) were with Atlanta.

Easily belongs in the discussion of best all time. What an amazing career.

He'll go in as a Brave, but I think he thinks of himself as more a Cub. If he takes a coaching job, I'll bet it's with the Cubs, not the Braves.

I can't imagine that Maddux has too many fond memories as a cub. . . .

1988 saw him go 15-3 in the 1st half only to have the team suck balls in the 2nd half and he ends up 18-8.

1989 was nice, no doubt about it.

1992 was a Cy Young year and a hack job GM.

1993 - 2003 was nothing but post season appearances, Cy Young Awards, and a world series title.

2004 --- supposed to be THE year for the Cubs. . . .

2005 --- I'm sure he was soooooo glad that Neifi saved the season for them.

2006 ---- Traded to the Dodgers

I love Maddux, but he's a Brave great who got his start with the Cubs. The 300th win was gravy for Cub fans.

it has been written, researched, and argued (and well) that you could call pedro in his prime the most dominant pitcher ever. that doesn't mean his whole career, that just means during his peak years.

his 2000 season was insane

Both of them had a seven-year stretch where they were about as good as it gets.

Pedro ('97-'03)

118-36, 2.20 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 11.26 K/9, 5.59 K/BB, 0.59 HR/9

Opponent's line: .198/.253/.297/.550

Maddux ('92-.98)

127-53, 2.15 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 6.91 K/9, 4.78 K/BB, 0.35 HR/9

Opponent's line: .221/.258/.297/.555

ERA+ during those years:

Pedro: 219, 163, 243, 291, 189, 202, 210

Maddux: 166, 171, 271, 262, 162, 189, 187

Look at the ERA's for the overall league in their respective years. The highest during Maddux's stretch was the NL's 4.39 in 1996. The lowest for Pedro was the NL's 4.14 in 1997 but after that it was the AL's 4.56 in 2002. Just doing a quick and dirty sum and average of the league ERA's during their stretches gives 4.12 for Maddux and 4.67 for Pedro. Not to take anything away from Maddux because his run was remarkable, but to me, Pedro's is clearly more impressive.
