Oh well. I guess Towers was asking for too much. I trust Jim's judgment on this.

Time to move on to getting Bradley and hopefully moving Marquis.

The Cubs' pursuit of Jake Peavy is over.

Ken Rosenthal

Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he was told by Cubs general manager Jim Hendry on Thursday that the Cubs were no longer interesting in pursuing a deal for Peavy.

The teams had spoken for weeks about a potential trade but talks broke down this week.

The Cubs were frustrated by the Padres' attempts to seek five or six players for Peavy with one team executive saying, "They're looking for a Herschel Walker-type deal."

Said Towers: "Yesterday I sensed (Hendry) had some reservations about if he wanted to do it or not. We were asking for a lot. With Peavy we plan on getting a lot."

Peavy has a full no-trade clause. If he is traded, Towers said that he would need to start the process over and consult with Peavy and his agent Barry Axelrod about which teams they would consider and move forward. Towers, however, also said he is not certain that the Padres want to engage in further Peavy discussions.

i sure hope a 34 year old 2b with one year left on his contract didn't just prevent the cubs from getting peavy.

I agree. My guess is that DeRosa was not the stumbling block.

I doubt it did.

I'm ok with that. Now trade for marquis and add Furcal and Bradley to solidify the offense.

They'll have to trade him at some point. So, we'll see what happens.

I wonder how true that is. That could have been misinformation coming from an party who'd like to make life more difficult for the Pads.

It's not dead unless they somehow figured out a way to move other money and keep Peavy.

Exactly.

It's dead for now, like Bruce said.

Even if we don't get him, as long as he doesn't somehow wind up in our division (which I have a hard time seeing), I'm ok with it.

This is Hendry using the greatest leverage tool he has. To walk away when the Padres are asking for the moon.

Towers will now to to Peavy, who will tell Towers he will only accept a trade to the Cubs. Towers will come back to Hendry before the end of the day with his tail between his legs and Hendry will accept the deal on his terms, not Towers.

Start the Peavy to the Cubs trade countdown now......
