Oh hell

LAS VEGAS - The legwork, complex and time-consuming, for a potential Jake Peavy trade to the Chicago Cubs has essentially been completed.

Now, all Padres general manager Kevin Towers needs is for his Cubs' counterpart, Jim Hendry, to give him the go-ahead to make the deal.

Towers said Monday night that he has facilitated a three-team and possibly a four-team deal that would send Peavy to the Chicago for a package of players.

"There's a package there that will satisfy us ... there's a deal in the way of names," said Towers, who carefully stated that no deal, even in principle, has been reached.

Towers, who had a discussion with Hendry earlier Monday, said he had been in contact with a third and a fourth team - believed to be the Orioles and Phillies - and has gotten both sides to agree to the players in play who could be moved in a deal.

Towers did say there might be some "haggling" over the players the Padres would get in return from the Cubs.

The Padres are looking for Major League-ready pitching in return for Peavy, whether it be from the Cubs or the other teams involved.

Towers said a deal "could happen quick" if Hendry and the Cubs agree to assuming not only Peavy's $11 million salary in 2009 but the remainder of the $63 million he's owed over the next four seasons.

please be true please be true

I want to believe this, but I also don't want to get disappointed again. I'll wait until it's officially announced before I get excited.

Unless bigbird confirms this rumor I don't believe it.

i have small hands. handful is 1 or 2.

Then you and I are on the same-ish page. I was thinking 5 to 15 runs.

Dangit! Quit talking about that here!

:D

If you'd give my fanclub its own forum, we wouldn't have this issue.

Correct if me I am wrong to assume the following:

If this deal turns into a 3rd, and possibly 4 team trade, could it be reasoned that more then Jake Peavy would be coming to the Cubs?

The announcement isn't that a deal is done, or that anything is really agreed to. All he's saying is "if you can get me players A, B, C, D, and E, then Peavy is all yours."

It wouldn't shock me to see Hendry pull a disappointing prospect out of another club. Don't expect any major league pieces or minor league blue-chippers, though.

So who do we all think is leaving town if this deal gets done? The names that have been kicked around:

Marshall-likely

Vitters-likely

Guzman-possible

DeRosa-possible

Marshall-likely

Hart-possible

Pie-likely

Atkins-rumored at one point or another

Marquis-possible

Cedeno-possible-likely

Probably a handful of lower level guys who arent even on the radar.

I always read the post before looking to see who posted it (and I don't have any images turned on)...

I thought for sure this was a post from meph. No offense to either of you, of course. :D

Vitters, Marshall, and Ronny are almost certainly involved in any trade. Looking at the farms systems for the other potential teams, Wellington Castillo is probably gone too.

Do we have two Marshalls? :P

Towers comments kinda scare me a little bit. He made it sound like the Cubs could have some issues agreeing to this trade. Would everyone still be happy with the deal if we ended up trading Vitters,Pie, Guzman, Marshall, DeRosa and Marquis to for Peavy and average prospect? Because I can see something like Marquis(with cash), Vitters, Olson, Happ, and Marshall to Padres. DeRosa to Phillies, and Pie and Guzman to the Orioles with Peavy and prospect to the Cubs. Personally I think that could be too much to give up, and would Guzman or Marshall at least out of the deal. Edited by cubsfan26

Meph's fanclub already has its own part of the forum, and nobody ever posts there.

You forgot about the little known Steve Marshall, a PTBL in the Neifi Perez trade. No, I just made him up.

I thought all we got from that trade was Chris Robinson... and not having Neifi anymore.

Isn't Marquis owed 10 million? If we can move him and his full contract and move DeRo.... we'd have enough to sign Roberts.

It's an understandable mistake on Tim's part. I'm kinda like your evil twin.

Doesnt he have to become a free agent first?
