With steroids tainting Roger Clemens (mwahahahaha!), you can make a really good case that Greg Maddux was the best pitcher of his era.

Are you putting Pedro Martinez in his era or just behind it?

Pedro was the more dominating pitcher at his peak (arguably...you can make an argument that he wasnt), but its hard to discredit Maddux's consistency. Plus Maddux's peak years were pretty dominating and can only be matched by Pedro.

This.

Pedro was better at his peak, but Maddux had a better and more successful stretch.

One of my favorite players to watch. I couldn't help but root for him no matter who he was pitching against (except us). I'm grateful that I was lucky enough to follow his entire career.

My first ever trip to Wrigley was in '89. I was 12 years old. Maddux pitched against the Expos that August night and I can still hear the "pop" of the mitt. It was crisp and clear and basically perfect. I know it seems weird, but it's something I'll never forget.

Maddux had some zip on his heater back in the day.

So what hat does he wear in the HOF?

Easily Braves. Even now, despite having watched him for so many years with the Cubs, both before and after the Braves, whenever I think of Greg Maddux in my head, he's in a Braves uniform.

I think of that funky mustache from 87 or 88. He looked like a 12 year old kid with a fuzzy lip.

Yeah, Maddux is a legend, but Pedro Martinez is FAAAAAAAAAR better. Not even really close.

Yeah, you put up a career 154 ERA+ over 2700 innings and you are pretty much the best pitcher of all time.

I have to concur. I run down some of the greats ERA+; guys like Walter and Randy Johnson, Cy Young, Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, so and so, and none of them have ERA+ higher then Pedro. So Pedro can be argued that he is the best pitcher in MLB history.

I'm still holding out hope that Maddux will decide to return for one more season and take a shot at passing Warren Spahn on the wins list. Although Maddux is now just a reliable 5th starter at best, I still love watching the guy pitch.

I think that was sarcasm.

Lefty Grove put up a 148 ERA+ in 3900 innings which is essentially the same thing.

Walter Johnson pitched 5900 career innings, over TWICE as many, and put up a 147 ERA+. 8 points of ERA plus in absolutely no way makes up the innings difference of 3200 innings.

Essentially doesn't mean he is, just means he has a case. Nonetheless I would put Grove in the conversation as best in history of the game.

Most folks have Johnson and Grove #1 and #2 all time. However, when Pedro's career is over, he'll certainly be in the mix. His lack of consistent durability hurts his career value a little bit.

Yeah Glavine and Smoltz should be forced to retire too. It's only right. Kinda like how in Egyptian times, when a pharaoh died, the wife was burried with him - alive or not.

Yeah, great timing, Mad Dog. 999 career walks in the reg season. I think he joins Fergie Jenkins -- the Canadian Ace -- as the only pitchers with over 3,000 Ks and less than 1,000 BBs.

My wife gave me a Maddux-autographed ball from the All-Star game when it was played at the new PNC Park in Pittsburgh, but of course, I can't find it. Idiot. . .
