I suspect nothing on price of the deal?

Nothing I've heard. It's Levine, though, so keep the obligatory grains of salt handy.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he's right on this one - and not because of any supposed credibility Levine may have.

It's pretty clear the two sides want a deal done.

I'm told that Levine on WMVP reported that the Cubs and Dempster are trying to agree on a three/four-year deal.

Ryan Dempster the person is one hell of a guy from everything I've seen. I think just about anyone here would love to go out drinking with the guy for a night. However, i'm not sure if I want him pitching on this team again next year with the money he's going to command.

He was a big part of the regular-season success this year, but nothing in his career to this point shows that this was anything more than a fluke. Go after Peavy, or hit the FA market. It's freaking LOADED with arms that are far less of a gamble than Dempster.

Who knows what to expect in this market. The one thing we have gonig for us is this year's market is loaded in good SP. If this was two years ago, he'd be getting 20 mil. The fact is he's only had one really good season as a starter and there's several options ahead of him. I think his value will be determined by how desperate the teams are that lose out on CC and company. I could see him coming back for 10-11 mil per on the low end, and I could see him going somewhere else for 16-17 mil per on the high end. I really think Demp wants to stay here, and he'll offer a sizable hometown discount depending on how the market develops this year.

That would be Gary Matthews Jr. silly.

Who also, ironically, had one very solid year as a starter before becoming a FA...

Rosenthal from Foxsports wrote a column saying that Dempster will test the market, so it looks like the Cubs won't be getting any early-signing, home-town discount.

Nick Saban has a philiosophy at Alabama with regards to recruiting and it's the "you shop, we shop" plan. I wonder if Dempster is testing the market, will we see/hear Hendry talking to Kevin Towers sometime this week.

Sabans approach apparently works better in the NCAA than the pros.

I understand that, I'm just saying Hendry should look around for another starter if Dempster is willing to test the market.

Alas, I don't think Jim Hendry and the Cubs are lucky enough to operate with as big a budget as Nick Saban.

Ha ha ha. Nick doesn't have the budget that Pete Carroll has.

But Petey has to share with Tim Floyd.

Hahaha.......

Nonetheless, I think Dempster is willing to shop his services, the Cubs need to go ahead and look at other possibilities.

If I thought that there was a snowballs chance in hell that Harden could pitch a full season, Id say go ahead, let him go, but I doubt that will happen. Hopefully Uncle Jimmy can get uber agressive after Peavy at the meetings, and if nothing else find out for sure if we have a shot at getting him or target someone else.

Zambrano

Harden

Lilly

Marshall

Marquis

is an iffy rotation

Zamabrano

Lilly

Marshall

Marquis

?????

is way iffier.

justinept27: i could not agree more. The Cubs budget is going to be held in check until new owners come forward.I would try to accomplish lateral salary moves. For instance I would trade Ramirez a constant play off failure with great seasonal stats for Eric Chavez and Houston Street and pay the difference in salary. The Cubs desperately need a L.H. hitter and middle relief.
