Police: Tests show Barkley legally drunk

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Charles Barkley is taking a leave of absence from the broadcast booth.

The announcement by Turner Sports came Friday, hours after police said the 45-year-old former NBA star was legally drunk when police arrested him Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Test results show Barkley had a blood-alcohol level at .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Arizona.

Barkley will be off the air for a minimum of several weeks and no return date has been set, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it.

"I have spoken with Charles Barkley regarding the incident. .. and I understand he has hired a lawyer to represent him regarding this matter," said David Levy, president of TNT Sports, in a statement. "When I spoke with Charles, he was apologetic for the events that transpired and it was obvious he understands the significance of the situation. This is an important time for Charles as he deals with the legal and personal issues that confront him. Charles is a valued part of the Turner Sports organization and we are concerned for his well-being."

A Gilbert officer working a regional DUI task force stopped Barkley shortly after he left a popular nightclub at about 1:30 a.m. He failed field sobriety tests but was cooperative.

Barkley was booked and released at a field command post and later issued a statement saying he was disappointed he put himself in that situation.

Barkley's attorney wasn't immediately available for comment Friday.

Pretty ridiculous attempt to get out of it, but I'm a little surprised it didn't work. My mom used to date, and still talks to, a police officer that lives in Florida. Police officers that he has talked to in a different department say that they pull over Dan Marino all the time and he's absolutely plastered. They just take him home.

Oh, and hey. Cavs and C's tonight. :)

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Darius Miles/Portland Trail Blazers situation yet. Basically the Blazers are threatening to sue any team that signs Darius and plays him since if Miles plays in 2 games this season it forces them to pay the Luxary Tax because of their past signing of him.

“With all due respect…although the Cleveland Cavaliers have no interest in signing Darius Miles and will not be signing Darius Miles,” Gilbert wrote, “I find your email quite peculiar from two standpoints:

“1. It’s dead wrong. I believe that all 30 NBA teams were and are fully aware of the terms and provisions of the collective bargaining agreement as to which all teams and the NBA are a party to, including the Portland Trailblazers.

“2. Are legal threats through a mass email the best way to circumvent the known potential consequences that could result from the Trailblazers decisions and actions they took with respect to Darius Miles?

“I fully understand the frustration you and your team’s ownership must be feeling in regards to this situation, but a preemptive threat of ‘litigation’ directed at all of your partners through a group email does not sit well with me and seems to be incongruent with the spirit of keeping a ‘fiduciary duty’ and good ‘partner-like duty’ to your ‘NBA joint venturers.’

“I would think there has got to be a better tactic than this one.”

Dan Gilbert is amazing. A few years ago he put a public whipping on Stephen A. Smith after Smith was talking trash about him on TV.

Why the eff is Danny Granger with 5 fouls guarding Kobe in the last minute? You know they'll call the foul on Granger even if he just looks at Kobe.

And they can't get the game-tying/winning basket. Screw you, Indiana.

Brandon Rush should have been on Kobe there. As well on the last Laker possession, his length would have better contested Kobe's shot than Jarret Jack's.

The last play for Indiana, well that was just pathetic. Don't throw the ball into your center who can't shoot if you can't at least give him 2 options to pass to. That play was broken, and it showed. Should have been thrown into Troy Murphy, who if he couldn't get the pass off to Mike Dunleavy could turn and shoot.

This has little to do with anything, but I was listening to the Simmons podcast and he was talking with Ric Bucher and Marc Stein and someone brought up Kevin Durant, who Simmons loves. One of the other two guys said something along the lines of, if Durant's so good, shouldn't OKC be winning more despite his supporting cast? I believe he then mentioned MJ winning with little help his early years, and mentioned a couple names besides, one of whom was Dwyane Wade, whose team won FIFTEEN GAMES LAST SEASON.

Maybe it's just residual bitterness from two Bulls/Heat playoff series, maybe I just have an irrational hatred for Wade, but it seems like he is and will be tremendously overrated historically, with people seemingly willing to brush aside his negatives.

Two things.

1. OKC isn't gonna sniff 15 wins this year.

2. Wade missed most of last year, if you wanna blame him for the Heat only winning 15 games you might as well blame MJ for the Bulls sucking again this year. Neither of them had much to do with the team being bad.

The Pacers are hilarious. Just since December 20th, they've had games that look like this:

Philadelphia: T.J. Ford hits jumper with 3.9 seconds left, Pacers win by 1

New Jersey: Devin Harris hits jumper at buzzer, Pacers lose by 1

Memphis: Pacers miss a 3 pointer at the buzzer and lose by 3

New Orleans: David West hits a 17 footer with 2.5 seconds left, Pacers lose by 2

New York: Jarrett Jack hits jumper with 0.9 seconds left, Pacers win by 2

Sacramento: Kevin Martin, who had 45 points that night, misses 2 different 3 pointers with 15 seconds left that would have tied the game.

Phoenix: Danny Granger makes 3 pointer at buzzer, Pacers win by 3

Lakers: Kobe makes jumper with 3.9 seconds left, Pacers lose by 2

If I went further back in the season, I could find at least half a dozen more. I'm not sure if it's good or bad that they play so competitively and yet lose so much. But I've never seen a team like this that might as well just play the last minute of a game because the first 47 don't seem to matter.

Actually, they won 4 (Philadelphia, New York, Sacramento, Phoenix)

They've been a lot better the last week and a half, but that has been a sharp departure from the rest of the season. They've already lost all 4 OT games they have played this year and have a losing record in close games that are decided in regulation. When you've already played between 15-20 games that are decided by a possession, you think you could win more than 35 percent of those games.

I'm pretty sure the Blazers meant that email directly to Memphis, but basically CC'd the entire NBA. And this issue is much deeper than Darius Miles, it is the fact that Jerry West is still the GM of the Lakers. First Gasol was handed to LA for nothing in one of the most one sided trades in NBA history and now Mephis is basically trying to muck up Portland's cap. Is it maybe because Portland will probably be the main threat to LA the next few years with their core of Roy, Aldridge & Oden? Stern needs to step in, the NBA is becoming the WWE.

They had an earlier game against the Lakers where LA was up by 14-16 going into the fourth quarter but the Pacers won with a tip in by, I believe, Troy Murphy at the buzzer.

Wait. So Memphis is doing this to screw over Blazers for L.A.? Haha. Awesome.

Apparently it's a direct order from Jerry West's nonexistent office in Memphis.
