I can't see Hendry going out and getting a SS since the whole office has their Ryan Theriot fetish..I would take Furcal or Renteria anyday over Theriot and put him on the bench.

I seesawed between Dunn and Furcal, but settled on Dunn. Hendry and Lou have made it known they want a LH power bat in the middle of the order and will sacrifice some defense to get it, which points right at Dunn.

I picked Dunn as well. He seems to be the type of player the Cubs would drool over (left-handed, massive power, high OBP) and would have some value as a replacement for Lee at 1B if/when they should decide to move him.

When did Dunn become "toolsy"? Those are the guys the cubs drool over.

Theriot is a better 2b than he is a shortstop, and the office has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of committment to making DeRosa "The Man" at any one given position. I could see them getting Furcal, sliding Theriot over, and DeRo getting more time in RF with a smattering of 2b/3b starts.

I guess Milton Bradley, but I'd be shocked if any of those players ended up with the Cubs. After re-signing Dempster/Wood there probably won't be money for Dunn/Sabathia, I doubt Hendry and Lou are looking for a shortstop, and I don't think we have the pieces to trade for Roberts and definiately not for Peavy.

After Dempster/Wood I expect close to nothing this offseason. I just don't see where the resources are going to come from.

i don't mind wood all that much, but man i am just waiting for the day not too long from now when i can be pissed off by reading something on here telling me that dempster will be a cub for another 4 years

if hendry is smart and lets his emotions cool...letting dempster go will open this team up for a little more offseason wrangling

I completely agree. Unfortunately I think it's inevitable that he's going to lock him up.

Id be willing to bet on 1 big aquisition, be it through a trade or FA.

Brian Giles is the most realistic. The Cubs need a LH bat without a big multi-year contract.

I'd try to get Greene in the same package. Start with Pie and some combination of Samardzija, Theriot/Cedeno, and Hill. Platoon Fukudome/Johnson in CF. Landing both would mean not signing at least one of Wood or Dempster.

Brian Giles is the most realistic.

Given his willingness to use his NTC and his apparent desire to stay out west, he's not very realistic at all.

According to Cot's his full NTC expired after 2006. He can only block trades to eight teams: Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Florida, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Washington. I suppose he could threaten to retire, but I'd be surprised if he would.

I think he has 10-5 status now.

He does. 2008 was his 5th full season with the Padres.

Wow. I was thinking it was 3 or 4.

Time flies. He was traded by the Pirates to the Padres in Aug. 2003 for Jason Bay, Oliver Perez, and the ever-popular PTBNL.
