this san jose/detroit game is ridiculous

i see a lot of roughing at the end of the second. detroit would be truly dominant of they had a top 10 (or even top 15) goalie..

the game between the Caps and the Pens was very good. I watched that one instead of the Hawks. It was carried on Yahoo. I think the Crosby stuff is over-hyped, but that kind of stuff is done in every sport. Sadly what it does is create casual Crosby fans instead of NHL fans.

Magnum...I dont know if Datsyuk is the best player in the NHL. He is very dominate and I wonder why he doesnt get marketed more. No matter what you think of him he probably is the most exciting player to watch in hockey and usually makes at least one top ten play every game. You would think the NHL would be putting him in the spotlight a little more.

i think ovechkin is probably the most "exciting" player, but datsyuk is probably a better all-around player.

datsyuk isn't marketed because he isn't particularly marketable. he's not talkative or a good quote -- and he's russian -- so he doesn't get press. it's a shame, but as you say, it happens in every sport.

Datsyuk just reminds me of the Bill James/Rickey Henderson quote. if you could split him into 2 players you still might get 2 all stars out of it. for somebody who puts up points like he does, he plays phenomenal in his own zone.

I have wondered how Holland and the Wings European scouting team rates players. They have been hugely successful with Euro players. A common attribute that they seem to have is that they are hard workers. Datsyuk combines great skill with hard work.

the flyers blew a three goal lead last night - at home, in the third period, to the thrashers. great teams don't do that sort of thing. i'm sure they did what they did most of last year too, sit back and play overly defensive hockey, spend all period in their zone, trying to hang on for dear life. that, once again, goes squarely on our dunce of a coach.

fortunately we scored again and won it, but that will probably be our undoing down the road.

they fixed it now and i didn't get a screencap, FOR SHAME.

it listed the all-star game final as 4-1. Carey Price scored 3 of the goals for the east, Luongo had the lone goal for the west.

they should introduce Goalie Shootout into the skills competition, make them leave their pads on and use the same sticks. i know i'd love it.

talking about suspending Datsyuk and Lidstrom for not playing in all-star game

this is the only place I have read this so it may just be this guy blowing smoke

oops looks like it is confirmed Datsyuk and Lidstrom out next week against Columbus

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=264365&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main

Datsyuk missed the end of the game against Pheonix the other night. Lidstrom has been slowed since his pre-winter classic injury. Think the NHL may be going overboard to make this stupid game more meaningful.

Ok another edit and now a rant. NHL rules being subjectively administered again. Sid is also not playing but will not be suspended cause he has shown up to some stupid press conference so he gets an exception. Sounds like Bettman offered the same to the Wings players but Kenny Holland, the Wings GM, basically said he can blow it out his....

Saw a thread on HFBoards last night during the ASG about best anthems ever... made me do some research and present to you guys my favorite HOCKEY anthems for both countries, both give me chills every time.

UNITED STATES

Can't believe I was only 4 during the 91 all-star game... didn't understand the whole war thing but I remember watching this live. I give to you, the '91 All-Star game at Chicago Stadium:

Not Canadian, not too fond of Canadiens ( ;) ) but this was absolutely amazing, rivals the '91 ASG even for a country that isn't my own.

Check out the guy at :57...lol!

EDIT: ALSO...

I'd like to go on record as saying Tim Thomas is becoming my new favorite goalie. After his play at the ASG and watching the Bruins/Caps last night... it solidified by man crush on him. On top of that he's just a cool guy.

I might have to change my team in the East from the Rangers to the Bruins!

Posted

yeah, he's always been fun to watch, even back to when we used to make it out to Vipers games regularly

speaking of the Bruins, the Boyes/Wideman swap got a lot of negative press from Boston's end but Wideman's really turning into a very good defenseman, as Boyes proves to be a terrible defensive liability. though i'm having a hard time shaking my

of Wideman...

Nice of Buffalo to erase our short-lived glory of giving The Oil their worst home defeat in franchise history.

10-2 last night. Stafford turned the trick.

I don't know if this a dumb question, but in games like that how bad is the goalie? I can understand even 5 goals, but 10?

Without watching the game or being an expert on hockey but knowing more than the average guy. Chances are there were going to be multiple goalies although each one is still allowing a crapload of goals. The biggest problem would probably be defensive positioning, it doesn't matter if you're a good goalie when the defense is out of position and the offense has multiple easy chances to score.

It has to be a combination of everything. In that game the Hawks played against Edmonton, everything was clicking AND the goalie wasn't tip-top. Plus, in both that game and the one last night (and in pretty much every game where more than 6 goals are scored) more than one goalie was in on the action. So you have to think it's more the offense and a lack of effort from the defense.

K I figured it was probably 2 goalies to, but it's just insane to see a score like that on Sportscenter like once a month

Since the rule changes after the lock-out, scores like this are more likely to happen because the game is more open now (At least that's what logic tells me, I don't have difinitive stats or anything. I did hear that scoring is up this year over the past although I don't know if that's true.)

I could be wrong, but I feel like the year they changed the rules the scores went wayyyyy up and then they've gone down a little bit since that year. I think that was 3 years ago?

Yeah, that's the way it felt to me too. I couldn't watch hockey the year it came back. It felt too artificial. Like basketball on skates.
