Sometimes I feel like the pain is too much, and ask myself why I keep putting in the time year after year, watching every game I can, putting off other things and rearranging my schedule just to be there for first pitch, thinking that one of these days it will all pay off and the joy will erase the hurt, and if I'm ultimately just wasting my time and damaging my own psyche by putting myself in such a position of ultimate disappointment. I'll admit ... I've recently started asking myself if it's really worth it, or if I'm really doing myself more harm than good.

Then, I think about my grandfather ... in his 80s, in poor health, in a nursing home, and how every year he still has hope. I can't allow myself to quit when I know he's still holding on. If someone who's been through that much can keep going, then so can I.

If you're in your 20s, 30s, whatever, and feel like giving up, I can totally understand. Hell, you'll probably be doing yourself some good by taking a break or stepping away. But I just couldn't live with myself if I did. I'm not only a fan for myself and the team, but I'm a fan for my family, and I owe it to them to keep the hope going.

Tragically, I think my only way out is fathering a child and raising him or her in a geographic location far from Chicago. I don't see it happening before next season. I'm accepting applications, ladies.

I live 2100 miles away and I can tell you - it doesn't work....

I live 10,000 miles, 6 time zones away and it doesn't work. Heck, I got up in the middle of the freakin' night to watch this crap two years in a row -- only to get the fan equivalent of getting a Kerry Wood fastball in the cup. Thanks.

not only would you quitting the cubs improve your life, it would improve ours too. sounds like a win-win. see ya

I'm not here to improve your life. As far as my own? We'll see, I'm still working that out.

Besides, if there's anything certain types of fans love, it's fans they can feel superior to. I'm providing an example that loyal fans can feel better about themselves for their not being me.

What can we really do? we have center field and MAYBE rf (though I doubt they'll give up on Fukudome already after shelling about 48 mil) to fill. I really don't expect much this offseason. They'll probably re-sign Wood and overpay for Dempster, then tell us how they've already built a 97 win team and they just need to stay healthy.

I totally agree with you. Possibly trade for McLouth (or Beltran) for CF, pick up a SP, etc. Many of us have been saying all along that all you can do is put together the best team possible and win your division, the playoffs are a crapshoot. The Cubs put together the best team in the NL for 162 games and then lost to the hottest team at the moment. I'm sure they will be favorites to win the NL Central again next year, but who knows what will happen in the playoffs. When the playoffs begin, you need to have 1 or 2 players that hit a hot streak for a few weeks. As streaky as we all think the Cub players are, the vast majority of ML players are streaky. Unfortunately, it seems that all of the Cub players hit a slump at playoff time.

Bring Hoff up and be willing to sit D. Lee.

I still like Edmonds off the bench, are we going to see him or not?

No we won't be seeing Edmonds in a Cub uniform. I think Hoffpauir will be with the team next year and will give Lee more rest, but Hoffpauir is not an everyday player.

(with the caveat that I'm aware that no one will ever remember in six months when they give me crap about this that I've said every time that there's about an 85% chance that I'll be back):

Thought about that. Decided this is for me, not a cheap money grab. I'm researching teams now that I might like, got it narrowed down to a couple. I'm restricting myself to AL (with one exception) and non-playoff teams.
