I'm sorry, but this doesn't even come CLOSE to the pain I felt in 2003. This naturally sucks bad, but 2003 was gutwrenching pain - probably what childbirth feels like out of the stink star. And the baby weighed 35 pounds.

Amen!

Seriously, what's so frustrating about this? They were never in it at all. The system of the playoffs is still that the hottest team, not the best team wins first round matchups. Anyone really believe the Rockies were the best team in the NL last yr? 2003 was especially excruciating because the Cubs used the "hot team card" to eliminate the Braves who won 101 games. We all forget that? Then they overcame a 0-1 deficit to take a 3-1 lead with Zambrano, Prior, and Wood coming up. That my friends was heartbreak.

After Game 1 I felt like Ted Lilly against the D'Back last yr.

After Game 2 I felt like the Angels' player in Cro Magnon sign.

24 Hours after elimination I'm like "well it can't be a Cubs season without disappointment."

I actually feel worse today than I did yesterday.

It feels like breaking up with a girl. There are little signs and stuff throughout my day that remind me of times I was happy with the Cubs and full of unbridled hope.

Yeah same here - I'm disappointed but the pain isn't even CLOSE to the pain I felt in '03, or even '04. People tend to forget how high the expectations were in '04, at least as high as this year. But the '03 pain is off the charts compared to the '07 and '08 sweeps.

I really think the LDS ought to be seven games, and get rid of the 2-3 day layoff/buildup between the end of the LCS and the beginning of the WS. A crazier idea that gets floated every now and then for the 5-game format is to have the top team play game 1 on the road and then come home for the rest of the series. Maybe split gate receipts evenly for game 4 if the series gets that far, to compensate the club that lost a home game.

I assume you mean 84? 85 was more disappointing than 2001 for me - the Cubs were on top til all five of their starters went on the DL.

Nothing beats 2003. We should have won that... it was there for the taking. That year, it was almost harder to blow it than actually win it.

2004 hurt more than anything, because 2003 was the first one. I was a dumb kid who figured we'd be back in 2003. And unlike even this team, I was absolutely certain the 2004 team would win it all if they made the playoffs.

2003 is a distant second to 2004, with 2008 not far behind. 2007 is barely on the radar screen compared to those three.

2004 hurt you more then 2003? Seriously? That was such a miserable team that by the end I didn't even care.

I was 17, so I didn't realize until later what a bunch of dunderheads they were. It's not like 2003 was a band of wonderfully likable guys anyway, we just didn't know they were idiots until 2004.

And 2004 was a much better team. So yes, it hurt me more.

Yes yes, '84. My bad.

'85 was like, "oh wow 8 game losing streak. just a skid...

....12 games. please start winning.

....14 games, oh crap season over."

I think that was May.

1984 or 2003?

Very similar. Both teams were 1 game away from the WS with 3 to play. 1984 team led each of the 3 games they lost at one point of the game. 2003 team got beat convincingly by a spectacular pitching performance by Beckett in game 5. But they also had the biggest and latest lead (3 with 5 outs to go). They also managed to come back from a big game 7 early deficit to take a lead (remember Woodys HR? How I wish Dusty had recognized at that moment that Woody had just given all he could and bring in Clement)

The other common thread was that, at least for me, neither team was good enough to win the WS. In no way did I imagine that anyone would beat the '84 Tigers and I thought the same of the '03 Yankees. Oops!
