cubs.com[/url]"]The Cubs' playoff roster was officially announced Wednesday morning and, as expected outfielder Felix Pie was included. Pitchers Kevin Hart and Michael Wuertz, outfielder Micah Hoffpauir and catcher Koyie Hill were to go to Mesa, Ariz., to workout at the Cubs' facility as sort of a taxi squad in case they're needed. Infielder Casey McGehee and pitchers Chad Gaudin and Angel Guzman were expected to be sent home.

I can't say I'm a fan of that, though I'm not surprised at all that Gaudin won't have a shot to be added to the roster later on.

Yeah, I don't quite get the point of sending guys home. Is it some sort of response to what they believe was poor behavior?

well, obviously the rumors are strong that Gaudin's injury occurred as a result of heavy drinking. Guzman I assume is for baseball reasons.

I too think that Hoff should have made the roster over Ward, but I don't think it's an earth shattering mistake.

Besides, we're fine if we get down to Daryl Ward as our only pinch hitter. We'll probably still have Z available. :D

Yeah and Casey McGehee called Lou a jagoff.

They were sent home because they had no chance of being injury replacements.

I understand people are upset that Ward is on the roster over Hoffpauir. But there was almost no way that Lou was gonna put Hoffpauir on the roster over Ward. The battle was always between Pie and Hoffpauir. Ward spot was almost a lock, because Lou likes his experience, and that he is use to pinch hitting, while Hoffpauir is use to playing everyday with very little amount of experience. I'm not saying it was the right move, and as others pointed out Ward is overrated as a pinch hitter in his career, but this is the kinda move Piniella is gonna make with his bench.

When push comes to shove Lou (and most managers) go to the veterans over rookies. That's why Ward and Howry are on the roster. Pie is on because the wind will be howling in for the first two nights, which means you need to emphasize speed and defense.
