She stands alone on the corner of Clark and Addison

This dowager queen, dressed in black and pearls

75 years old

Proud head held high

And not a hair out of place

Awaiting yet another date with destiny

Another time for Mr. Right

She dreams, as old ladies will

Of men gone long ago

Joe Tinker

Johnny Evers

Frank Chance

And of those of recent vintage

Like her man Ernie

And The Lion

And Sweet Billy Williams

And she thinks wistfully of what might have been

And the pain is still fresh and new

And her eyes fill

Her lips tremble

And she shakes her head ever so slightly

And then she sighs

Pulls her shall tightly around her frail shoulders

And thinks

“This time.”

“This time it will be better.”

EDIT - D'oh, I've been beat to the punch. But that article above gives a little info about it.

We take you back to an October night in 1989, when the Cubs were hosting the San Francisco Giants in game one of the NLCS. Vin Scully did an open that to this day, still gives off goosebumps. Vin didn’t hype the game and talk up Andre Dawson or Will Clark. NBC didn’t dust off an old copy of Foreigner 4 to try to fire up the fans.

I wish Scully still did some national broadcasts. It couldn't be any worse than Stockton. And at least it's still his voice.

My friend wrote a great blog post about Vin Scully:

Salon.com has a transcript of legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully's call of Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game against the Chicago Cubs, a game in which both pitchers combined to give up only one hit (!), leading to it being labeled "the greatest game ever pitched."

The editor's note calls it "pure baseball literature," which is not at all inaccurate. This is really a model of what sportscasting should be at its finest -- and I say that without even having listened to Scully's delivery, which based on his reputation must be incredible.

But for me, the greatest height achieved in this broadcast was not any of Scully's painterly turns of phrase, like "29,000 people and a million butterflies," though those are certainly impressive. (And keep in mind, he was making it all up as he went along!) It has to do with the way he reacted when the perfect game was completed. He simply says:

Swung on and missed, a perfect game!

and then shuts his mouth and lets the crowd's cheering speak for itself.

38 seconds of "dead air time" in usually considered a great sin in broadcasting, but Scully knew that there were times when rules needed to be broken. And this was not the only time he did something like this.

There aren't enough poets or enough words in this or any other language to accurately describe the beauty of Wrigley Field.

uhhh, let's take it easy here

She stands alone, never sheds a single tear

She stays in the coolest moods, clearly woman of the year

She and all her (boy)friends, they go out dressed to win

She stands on the cooler side of town

but she lives in my lap

She lives in my lap!

She lives in my lap!

She lives in my lap!

Make me want you, make me miss you

make me wonder where you are, then forget you

Girl remind me, just who we are

We're oh so close, but yet so far
