I was standing in the left field bleachers last night turned around and realized that the Budweiser house roof had been covered with multiple brown tarps. Anyone else see this? Does anybody have any idea why it was covered?

This building's for you

The "Budweiser Building" behind the left-field wall at Wrigley Field could have a new sponsor Saturday, depending on a temporary restraining order filed against the owner of the building, who covered the ad with tarp a few days ago.

Tom Gramatis, who bought the building for a reported $8.5 million this summer, said Budweiser did not send its rent payment on time in September, allowing him to terminate the agreement.

"I filed a valid five-day notice," he said. "They sent a payment after [the five days], but it was too late."

The Budweiser ad has been painted on the building for nearly 13 years, and the lease was to expire Feb. 9, 2009. Gramatis said there was no bidding war for rights to an ad on the building, but added: "I listened to different people's offers [before picking one]."

The timing is right for Gramatis because a new advertiser should get maximum exposure during the postseason. The Cubs have no say in the decision.

"We have a tremendous partnership with Budweiser, but [the building] is privately owned," Cubs senior vice president Mike Lufrano said. "Obviously, we have a separate relationship with the rooftop owners, but we have no say in the operation [of the building]."

The owner is just be a jerk and trying to use a loophole to make more $$.

HE has been the owner for years and revealed today that he gets 347K / year.

So he did not get the check in time. He has money to pay 8.5 million for the home.

He is using a contract loophole to get another advertiser to give him more money..

Look if there had been problems with them for years, maybe that is the case..

But loopholes (like a free agent who wants to opt out of his contract and get more or guys like Brian Erlacher (sp) wants a new contract before his expires)

I think it is b.s. and there is a word called loyality...

but it may remain Budwiser or Pepsi for all I care...

If I were making 347K just for owning a house, and found a way to make more money through a loophole...

Man, I would take that in a second. There is no loyalty in advertising.

The rumor around Wrigleyville "people" is that the guy's plan ultimately is to get out of any agreement with Budweiser and tear the thing down and install one of those giant LCD billboards in its place. He'd sell out advertising and, supposedly, attempt to lease out space to the Cubs to use it as a JumboTron.

Don't shoot the messenger. Just what I heard from people that know people.

What? Now the Budweiser house too? Nearly every single building back there has been replaced, raised, releveled, rehabbed etc..

Is this a good spot for me, a guy who has been going to Cubs game for 35 years to complain about what is going on at Wrigley? Or should I take this to rants?

Wrigley was such an awesome, casual, lazy-day, hanging out place to go watch a game when I grew up 6 blocks away. But now the tourist trapness and the moneymaking endevours drives me crazy. The whole Wrigley backdrop now(bleachers, behind the park, the scoreboard, etc...) is about moneymaking. I guess it's progress, and I guess it's inevitable and understandable. It's what they have to do to field a winning team.

I still love the place and it's one of my favorite places on earth, but the Wrigley experience isn't the same as it used to be.

Err, how does the "backdrop" help field a winning team? The Cubs aren't making money from any of that crap.

Yeah I know. I am just going on one of my old man rants, that all. lol

Actually the Cubs are making money(is it 17% of total revenue) from the businesses across the street.

Can I put a jumbotron on top of my house and advertise to my neighborhood? Aren't there laws or codes or edicts or something about this? Edited by swordsman

judge says...

A Cook County Circuit Court judge today granted the temporary restraining order that Anheuser-Busch requested against the owners of the "Budweiser Building", who had covered the well-known painted beer advertisement with a brown tarp.

The ruling means that the owners cannot interfere if Anheuser-Busch wants to remove the tarp.

After the hearing, a representative from Anheuser-Busch said that the tarp will be removed this evening after the Cubs game.

WTF?

what do you mean?

just my opinion based on dealing with contracts and lawyers for the last 11 years. Gets frustrating when this country is going down the tubes with economy, debt and overall health.

In less than a year we will see the malfunctioning corp known as the USA REALLY hit the fan...

The bottom line is always more important than ethics..

Too many examples to mention..

Really who gives a rats ass about Budwiser or anyone else...
