If this should be in Cubs discussion, plz move.

I read this today and thought two things:

1.) If we resign Wood, it better be for MR.

2.) Why sign K-Rod for 5yr/$75M if we have this guy you might have heard of.... his name is Carlos Marmol. Argueably the best MR pitcher in baseball. I am sure there is a really good stat to back that up, but I just don't have time for that.

Signing K-Rod would be stupid. Allocate that money elsewhere like more offense.

The newest rumor on K-Rod is the Mets because of Wagner's injury. I don't think K-Rod makes sense for the Cubs.

Spending 5/75 million for a closer is stupid no matter who you are. 15 million a year for a closer. Wow!

Agreed. Although look at Marquis's salary! What a marketplace if you're a pitcher.

As a Cubs fan, I'd love for the Mets to spend $75m on K-Rod.

The Cubs would be much better off addressing the OF than another bullpen arm beyond Wood. With that said, I wouldn't be against a 7th inning guy sending Samardzija to cont. to progress as a starter at Iowa, but that's separate than allocating most of the avail. payroll on a closer.

Nah. Save the money and use Gooz.

I need to see an ability to pitch a full season before counting on Guzman. He should be given a role in the '09 pen. But with how Lou manages the pen, he'll likely have to be cautious with Guzman and he isn't cautious on role filling productive relief.

It doesn't make sense to spend 15 million on any reliever. I'd really prefer to move that guy named Carlos Marmol to the closer position

That's what I am saying. Carlos should be the closer next season.

Carlos should stay in the role he's in because that's more valuable than closer.

Actually, it would be best if they just used him in the highest leverage situations, regardless of inning (i.e. one run "saves", runners on in the 7th in a 1 or 2 run game, whatever), but that'll never happen.

I'd rather not waste Marmol with a 2 or 3 run lead and nobody on for a good bulk of his appearances.

That would be a very dumb move on our part. Kerry Wood has come in and done a fabulous job this year. I don't want us anywhere near K-Rod for the price he's asking. We have much better, cheaper options internally.

I'd rather spend the money to get a starter.

there are like 7 options better than giving K-Rod $75m

maybe 70, honestly.

a 120 pound closer with a violent delivery and numbers trending the wrong way? where do i sign?

Not to mention that K-Rod isn't even an elite closer anymore.

Joke?

No.

Hes about to set the saves record DESPITE the fact that his peripherals have gone down the Howryer (relatively speaking, of course).

Edit: Hes improved the last couple months. Possibly his issues at the beginning of the year were due to his ankle. Still though, hes allowed too many baserunners to be at the top level of closers.

Another reason why saves are overrated. How much is Mariano Rivera making? Does K-Rod think he's better and who would be dumb enough to spend that on a relief pitcher?

$15M/year and somebody

I would agree with the 7 not 70...The guys numbers might be getting worse, but getting 55 saves means your doing something right.

No not at 15mm, but 70 is a pretty ridiculous number
