Steve Clevenger's weekly blog entry:

MLB.com"]October 2nd - October 14th

For the first couple days here in Arizona we've gone over different situations such as Bunt Plays, Cuts/Relays, and First/Third plays to get everyone on the same page. After we finsihed with situations, practice usually ended with BP or if your a catcher, you end the day with bullpens. These first couple practice days were very good for getting to know the other guys on the team since the majority of them play for other organizations. Since I'm a catcher it gave me a chance to learn how guys like to throw and what they may need to work on in game situatioins.

At this point in the AFL we are 4-3 and everyone has knocked off the rust. We won our opener 3-2 against the Phonex Desert Dogs away. Even though I didn't get any hits in the game I did draw a walk in the top of the 10th inning and scored the go ahead run. Pitchers threw very well and we didn't commit any errors on defense. Playing in the AFL isn't a easy task because your not in the lineup everyday so you have to really take care of business during BP and infield/outfield to prepare yourself for game situations. But so far things are great and going as planned for myself.

Thanks again for the support and appreciate the comments.

Some great pitching lines in that 28-1 game.

2 IP, 9 hits, 9 ERs (40.50 ERA)

1.1 IP, 6 hits, 7 runs (2 ERs) (47.37 RA)

1 IP, 5 hits, 6 runs, 5 ERs (45.00 ERA)

Also fitting how the last guy to pitch for Surprise (who actually held a 1-0 lead) was named Laughter.

Tyler Colvin has a sore elbow (he has had elbow problems in the past - he was on the DL with Tennessee in 2007 because of it and he missed time at instructs/Team USA last fall because of it too). He's out for his 6th straight game today.

MLB.com"]Cubs OF Tyler Colvin has been sidelined with a sore elbow. The 2006 first-round pick was hitting .176 in five games before being shut down after his Oct. 14 contest. To replace Colvin, the Solar Sox activated Phillies OF Quintin Berry from the taxi squad for the remainder of the fall. Berry, who hit .272 with 51 steals this season, had a 30-game hitting streak at Advanced Class A Clearwater. The team also activated taxi squad C Steve Clevenger of the Cubs to fill in until the arrival of Phillies prospect Lou Marson, who is with the big league club as an emergency backup for the duration of the postseason.

Hi All!

The husband and I had a chance to go to the game at Scottsdale yesterday - it was the first time we had been to that stadium, and it was quite nice, although did seem a bit small for a ST complex. As Raisin has already posted, Clevenger and Barney were the 2 Cubs that saw action - not too much to report on those 2. Clevenger did an OK job behind the plate, but nothing spectacular. If anything, a couple of balls got by him that I was a bit suprised he didn't block.

Clay Buchholz started for Scottsdale and there were several situations where he fooled Mesa. The majority of the Mesa runs came against Kevin Pichardo (Giants) who just didn't look much like a AA pitcher yesterday. The left-side of the infield was all Giants yesterday too, and they did not impress - doesn't seem that they have much in the pipeline to be improving their big club any.

The couple of guys on the Solar Sox that did catch my eye yesterday - Quintin Berry from the Philly org was a little guy, but boy could he ever fly. Logan Morrison from Florida was a big drink of water, and is very impressive at the plate. Since the Phillies and Marlins don't have their low-A franchises in the MWL, we hadn't seen these guys before. Also interesting, they were both in hi-A last year. With Morrison, I'm not sure if he's always been at 1st base, or if they're trying him at that spot for the fall. He looked like he was still working to learn the position. There was one particular instance where he didn't cover 1st and just got caught watching the play.

We're heading to the game today too so will do my best to provide a little info tomorrow too :)

Seems like they're playing pretty fast and loose with the term "rising star".
