Carlos Zambrano broke a molar in half chewing gum during his appearance on Thursday.

Trainers came out to the mound after seeing him grimace in pain, and he proceeded to spit out half a tooth. "It's the gum," Zambrano said. "It has a lot of sugar, and I keep telling my daughter not to eat a lot of gum. I'm not a good example." The injury won't affect his next start.

Glad he's not going to be affected by it

That's good it won't affect his next start... but how do you break your molar chewing gum?

Have you seen him chomp on that gum?

I bet he chews the same gum everyday, so maybe after years of wear and tear, it finally gave up on him.

lol at Z. Legendary character. Some very good players are easily forgotten, whereas some merely good players are remembered forever. Regardless of where you or his career stats ultimately place Z, even the casual fan will never forget him, and us die-hards will be telling our grandchildren stories of his uniqueness.

Agreed. Z is a great character, and his legacy in Cubs lore can be cemented by helping the Cubs get something special later this year ;).

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll just put this here. I looked up how Z has pitched on days that he hits a HR over his career. He has a 3.81 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 93/43 K/BB, and 13 HRs allowed. He allowed 5 runs, 6 runs, 7 runs, and 9 runs once each, but he also had 4 shutouts and 4 games in which he gave up just 1 earned.

Other than the HRs allowed total, none of his numbers really jump out as abnormal.
