This thread raises two questions I'm dying to know the answer to:

1, how legitimate is Dempster's resurgence? He went from pretty mediocre to ace seemingly overnight, and while he has sustained his success all year, I'd hate for the Cubs to sign him to some huge contract only for him to regress back to his normal level of production. Last I heard, his FIP was a full run higher than his ERA (although it was a still-solid 3.8 or so). Does anyone have any convincing arguments one way or the other? (the glove waggle does not count as a convincing argument)

2, how legitimate is Samardzija's sudden turnaround? One minute, he was struggling through the minors, no one could even comprehend why he was promoted to AAA in the first place, and he couldn't strike anyone out if his life depended on it. Next minute, he was ringing up K's like there was no tomorrow, and he seemed untouchable. His peripherals suggest to me that the change is at least partially legitimate - it's not just ERA fluctuation, for example - but sudden reversals still make me nervous. What's the story, and how likely is he to revert back to his ways of old?

What do you guys think?

I am Mott any close to being sold he will be good as a starter. I don't think Howry comes back so he will fill an important role in the pen with Marmol and Wood. He would need to pitch like a #3 starter to become more valuable than his role in the pen.

This is similar to the moving Marmol to the rotation before the season started thread.

Next year's draft will also be very important, IMO. We need to start considering who the realistic replacements for Lee and Ramirez will be. I am guessing one or both may be gone by 2012-13.

Josh Vitters says hello. It would be nice to find a firstbasemen with a high pick.

that's not a big concern with a large market team and free agency. they need to pick the best players available.

I'm thinking maybe we shouldn't start making gameplans about Guzman and his role on next year's just because he's managed to stay healhty for whopping 3 weeks. Especially if it's factoring into reasons why we should let a possible Cy Young candidate walk in free agency.

And I'm thinking if Lou's job is to win baseball games, it's going to be hard to convince him why a reliever with a sub 1.2 ERA needs to start next year in AAA.

If Shark keeps it up, Gaudin, Shark, Marmol, Wood is one HELL of a pen.

I'm not necessarily advocating he goes to the rotation. Just throwing it out there.
