The Cubs are averaging like 3 runs a game this month, and I don't see it changing just yet. Between now and the 31st, do you see GM Jim Hendry try and get someone else to add to the offense? But then again, the trade market is a little thin this summer, so who would it be? Your thoughts here.

I have no faith Edmonds will stay healthy enough. Between his feet and his knees--I'm truly concerned about him. If DeRosa has to keep playing RF, while not getting rest, his production will decline. Fuku/Johnson + a quality RF bat seems like a rather safe bet to me.

this offense is not going to keep being as bad as it has been lately

I agree...but if Manny Being Manny really is available... =P~

hey, if we could swoop in and pick up somebody like Manny or Matt Holiday, I have no problems making such a move and moving Fukudome to CF. on the flip side, I'm perfectly content with the Johnson/Edmonds platoon

I saw an article where it said Hendry appears done unless we have an injury. I agree with Hall though, adding an OFer would be what I'd do too.

What would Texas want for Bradley and either of Francisco or Guardado? Would a package of Pie/Veal/Wuertz get it done?

It might be a start.

I think a combo of Pie/Veal or Wuertz/Howryfor Milton Bradley and Francisco would be more then enough.

More than enough to get Hendry laughed off the phone.

The problem is that the people who are really dragging down the offense right now aren't likely to be replaced. It's been Fukudome, Ramirez, Soto and to a lesser extent Lee, that have been really struggling. None of these guys can realistically be upgraded. The 3 possibilites for upgrade, DeRosa, Theriot, and Johnson/Edmonds have all been hitting well.

It's impossible for us to add offense. There's no one to replace.

If detroit was a few mor games back, Id say Renteria could be a decent pick up for us. I know hes not exactly having his best season, but he is who he is, and we know what hes capable of. I wouldnt be opposed to putting him at SS, Theriot at 2B and putting DeRosa as "Super Sub". Wed still be able to work him in the lineup more than you think, especially vs. lefties. Worse comes to worse, Renteria gos to the bench and is an upgrade over Cedeno.

As bad as Detroits pitching has been, wed probably be able to build a deal around Sean Marshall, or maybe even Jason Marquis.

This is why there won't be a move made. As I pointed out in another thread, who would you replace?

We're getting as good production out of SS, 2b, C and CF that we could probably get in a trade from the players available.

We're not going to replace our 1b, 3b, LF, or RF....so offensively there's no place to make a move. Of those positions, RF is the only one with any true concern. I don't think Lee, Soriano, or Ramirez will struggle all season long.

We could add a player to the bench, but with the way the bench is constructed that player would have to play SS or we'd have to decide to cut bait on Ward. I don't see finding a RH bat with decent pop that can play SS as those players are starters and not bench players. I really don't see Ward getting replaced either.

So, as far as our offense, unless someone gets hurt or unless Hendry decides that Edmonds is too banged up, I don't see where a move could be made.

Really? Do we think Edmonds is gonna be healthy all year? I'd like to see a RF and Fuku moved to CF.

This is what I was thinking. And Ward hasn't been worth a crap lately, either.

Hendry could add some more offense at second base (Kent/Roberts and move Derosa to platoon with Fukodome and be the team's super sub. Hendry could also find a RF or CF and make Edmonds/Johnson role players off the bench.

Edmonds/Johnson tadem is exceedingly replaceable, but not easily. Whichever stiff they put at 2nd is replaceable (Fontenot's freakish power included). But other than that, yeah. Which is why they have to win this year. The near future, she don't a look so bright.

The issue becomes if you get another 2b, then Fontenot is off the roster unless you go to 11 pitchers. The same with finding a RF/CF, one of Edmonds/Johnson would have to go...or else Fontenot will have to go.

With the way the roster is constructed, there's not an easy place to add offense unless you dump one of Ward/Fontenot/Edmonds/Johnson from the roster.

As good as Ward has been at times , he still can barely run the bases or play the outfield. He might have some vaule to an AL team. With Fontentot hitting the way he has been along with Edmonds coming off the bench and Hoff waiting in the minors Ward is expendable.
