I wonder who's going to be promoted today - Pearce or McCutch ? I'm betting on Pearce, although he didn't show much. I think this is his audition.

I'd be surprised if we make another trade at this point.

how is Neil Walker doing this year?

Not very well. Hitting upper 230s, lots of errors. I suspect he won't be a sept. call up.

that's too bad. i thought that guy was gonna rake

He still might. No one is writing him off yet. Another year @ AAA might do him some good.

The players involved are different that previously reported. From Rotoworld:

According to the New York Post, the Pirates will be getting Daniel McCutchen and Jeff Karstens along with Jose Tabata and Ross Ohlendorf from the Yankees for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.

It was widely reported last night (including by the Post itself) that George Kontos and Phil Coke were in the deal in place of McCutchen and Karstens. This is clearly better for the Pirates. McCutchen is arguably the Yankees' best remaining pitching prospect, though he's not a big upside guy and he doesn't rank with Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy. Karstens isn't much more than middle relief fodder, but neither was Coke.

At first glance, I thought that the Pirates included Andrew McCutcheon and my eyes almost started bleeding.

Confirmed here. Apparently, is wasn't a done deal until now.

Edit: Pearse is coming up, Nyjer Morgan taken off the 40 man, not sure if DFA's or outright released.

I was watching the Yankees/Red Sox game, and the anouncers said that Latroy Hawkins was DFAd to make room on the 25 man roster

That is true. IMO, if the Yankees can cut ties with Hawkins, then WTH are the Cubs thinking with keeping Howry?

No, the Yankees got the better of this deal. Tabata is another one of these overhyped Yankee prospects, and another one of these outfielders whose best skill seems to be being young for their level and holding their own but showing little else. Who was the last prospect to have such a high ranking for so long and actually shown so little?

dude the guy is 19 years old and playing in AA. coming into this season he had a minor league OBP of .375, and last year he hit .307 with a .371 OBP in the hitter-friendly FSL - while he was 18/19 years old. i don't know if he's gonna be great, but carlos beltran had a .674 OPS at age 20 in the carolina league. tabata has good strike zone discipline, and his power is yet to develop, but again - 19 years old. and trenton is a graveyard for hitters, too. so throwing in the towel on him is pretty foolish.

I didn't say throw in the towel on him. But these types of prospects are among my least favorite, personally, these guys who get all the props in the world just because they're really young for a level and not totally sucking. It seems like most of the time they don't live up to the hype, like Joaquin Arias, Luis Rivas, Asdrubal Cabrera, Ian Desmond, etc.

Isn't that the Alcides Escobar gimmick as well? Nate Spears was a 20 year old in High A with a .778 OPS when the Cubs traded for him.

This Tabata hype storm looks similar to the Melky Cabrera one in a lot of ways. I would not buy into it, personally.

Kontos is a local guy who I see at my gym in the winter. Works his legs like crazy. My knowing an active major leaguer will have to wait a little longer.

It's nice to see him doing relatively well. His numbers aren't that great, but he's at least moving up the ladder and limiting his walks.

Judging Tabata based on the fact that Melky was overrated is a pretty erroneous application of logic. Melky has nothing to do with Tabata.

Also, as far as Melky goes, his biggest problem is he was rushed up too fast. He's still only 23, and should just be hitting AAA rather than be in his third season in the majors. The Yanks were hoping they had the next Miggy Cabrera or ARod, but the fact is that only a few hitters come along every decade that can be productive in this leage when they're 20. I agree that he's over hyped, but I'm not going to write anyone off as a bust at the age of 23.

From Baseball Prospectus:

For the Pirates, the key to the deal is a very big bet on Tabata. The 19-year-old has been a disaster at Double-A this season, playing poorly, getting injured, and inspiring considerable doubt about his attitude and makeup. While 2008 is a lost year for Tabata, he represents the type of talent the Pirates have generally had problems getting into the system: young, high-upside with superstar potential and some risk involved. It’s not clear what he’s going to become, but what he could become is more impressive than any other Pirate prospect’s ceiling. This is the type of deal Neal Huntington needed to make. Considering that he flipped an impending free agent (Marte) and a player having a career half, this is a very good deal for the Pirates’ first-year GM.
