According to the Toronto Star, David Eckstein and Gregg Zaun "were both officially declared backups" Sunday and "could become trade bait."

John McDonald and Marco Scutaro have been splitting time at shortstop recently, while Rod Barajas gets most of the starts behind the plate.

Eckstein would be a decent back-up to Theriot if we had to include Cedeno in a trade.

I suggested that a while back, before we got Harden, trade for Burnett and Eck, and people thought that it was the craziest thing theyd ever heard. Theres a lot worse you could do at the end of your bench then David Eckstein, like, oh I dont know, Ronny Cedeno.

Also, the way it sounds, Toronto has wanted Eckstein gone for a whil now, so I bet if we offered Cedeno plus a few mid level prospects, we could get him.

He wouldn't be a terrible option since he only has a 1-year contract. I don't know if I could handle all the grittiness at one position though.

That would be a lot of gritty little white boys. Wed be like the early '90s Phoenix Suns of baseball.

How again is Eckstein better than Cedeno?

One-stop shopping.

David Eckstein and Matt Stairs.

I doubt the BJ will trade Matt Stairs, but if they are willing, I wouldn't mind another productive Canadian clown on the Cubs.

With that said, what about replacing Henry Blanco with Gregg Zaun? Zaun's numbers are definately better then Blanco, and would give the Cubs a decent switch-hitting catcher off the bench,

I would like to see if we could do a deal where we package Marquis and Cedeno for Burnett and Eckstein.

I don't know if that's workable and what we would have to include to make it happen.

How would that work for a monitary standpoint? The jays want to move Burnett to someone willing to pick up a significant chunk of his salary. Hes making 10 mil I believe. Meanwhile, Marquis is making 7 or 8 mil, so I dont see the Jays motivation there, unless we plan on picking up a big chunk of AJs salary plus Marquis'.

Seems fairly even.

I don't know. If the Jays think Marquis would give them value as an innings eater, they might be motivated. On the other hand, they may realize that Marqueef sucks.

Who? Who thought this?

Acquiring Eckstein would be sort of like traveling 6 or 7 years in the future and getting a 33 year old Ryan Theriot to be his own backup. That said, we could do worse than young Eckstein/Theriot starting and old Eckstein/Theriot backing up. Cedeno is useless as a bench player. He needs to be traded where he can start everyday, where streakiness and impatience aren't as big a liability. I'd try to get Eckstein and maybe a low minors prospect for Cedeno.

If a Burnett/Eckstein for Marquis/Cedeno/? could be done, I'd do it, but I bet the Jays wouldn't. The A's just got Philadelphia's 2nd best prospect for Joe Blanton. I bet the Jays can do better than Ronny Cedeno and whoever else we would send them. Also, why would they trade an overpaid pitcher and a SS they don't want for an even more overpaid pitcher and a SS who is probably worse than Eckstein anyway. There'd have to be a compelling 3rd and probably fourth guy in that deal going to the Jays and/or a lot of cash, and I'm not sure the Cubs have either. This is the kind of thing that would only happen if it got down to the wire on July 31, Burnett was throwing tantrums to be dealt, and nobody else was willing to give anything useful up.

Also, wouldn't it be odd for the 2 most hated Cardinal players from their WS team a couple years ago to now both be on the Cubs roster?

It would work because you appear to hate Ronny Cedeno.

I don't like Ronny Cedeno either. I'd rather have Marco Scutaro than Cedeno. I like Scutaro more than his numbers dictate.

Cedeno just looks awful to me. Since April he has like a .400 OPS. He swing looks terrible. I say let him be someone else's reclamation project. He's a waste of a bench spot.
