HOUSTON - The blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger is likely to send him to the disabled list for the 12th time in his career.

"We're coming to the point where we're going to have to come to a conclusion about what to do," manager Lou Piniella said Sunday.

Wood hasn't pitched since July 11, so the Cubs can backdate him on the DL to July 12, meaning he can return Sunday against Florida at Wrigley Field.

He has a blister and he's going to miss a week. It's not the end of the world.

The overreaction to an obvious joke.

I don't really see this as a big deal as long as it's just a blister and that he's back on Sunday. Probably a good thing to give his arm a rest anyway.

what you don't want to do is never let the thing heal and have it be a problem later. he should be fine, he had a few extra days rest so why not "use" it to make sure it's taken care of.

In the Cubs organization, a 10 day blister on your finger is code for "It's a race to see who returns to active duty first, Wood or Robb Nen."

We've seen this before. I'm not saying it's the end of the world, and I'm not saying it's anything serious. But we've seen little "minor" injuries before with Prior and Wood turn into big things.

But whatever. You've already got your mind made up as to what I meant, so I don't know why I'm even posting this.

A couple of years ago, maybe. The last year or so estimates of time to be missed have been fairly accurate.

When Sheets had a blister it was 15 days and then he was kind of babied back a little. Also, you have to worry that it will be a reoccuring issue ala Beckett. Overall though, unless it's a chronic thing, it will just be an extended break for Wood.

Hopefully, its just a blister, and he'll take a short vacation, and Eyre can take his place, and then when he returns, he can take Harts place.

But just in case, maybe we should see if we have anything the Rockies may want.

So a blister now means there is something possibly wrong with his elbow or shoulder? Clowns. Beckett used to have these things all the time, which he would go on the dl for. Let the problem heal now, rather than letting it reoccur the rest of this season. Not worried one bit.

Does a pitcher's blister eventually become a callous? When I first started lifting weights as a teen I would get blisters, but eventually they hardened. I have been lifting pretty consistently since and have never lost them. Is it different for pitchers because of the seams on the ball?

I would think that a pitcher wouldn't want a callous on the pads of his fingers as he would lose "feel" for the ball

wait, it doesn't sound like it was an "obvious joke", does it?

We have? I don't remember every seeing a blister turn into something serious with Prior and Wood. I do remember seeing things like sore shoulders, triceps, biceps, broken elbows and achilles issues becoming something serious. But claiming a blister is a sign of worse things to come doesn't make much sense to me.

Apparently Levine said that if he does head to the DL, it won't happen for a few days because the Cubs feel the pen hasn't been taxed lately and so they can wait a few days to see if it clears.

And LOL at a blister being the "minor injury" that leads to serious arm/shoulder problems.
