Im kind of confused as to what makes a minor leager eligible for the rukle 5. I believe there is a certain amount of minor league seasons without ever being on the 40 man? Who do we have that could be eligible for next years? Im thinking that Ryan Harvey or Matt Craig could be guys who some teams could take a chance on as rule 5s.

ryan harvey has been a professional for 6 years now, he still can't hit AA pitching, stay healthy or recognize pitches. nobody is going to try to keep him on a major league roster for an entire season. he's a non-prospect.

craig can probably be had for 15 cents and a big mac.

To be eligible for the Rule 5 draft, the player must not be on the current 40 man roster and have been in the organization for 4 or 5 years depending on when they signed. Players signed at age 19 or older are eligible for the Rule 5 draft four years after they were drafted or signed; players drafted or signed at age 18 or younger are exempt from the draft for five years.

These players are eligible for the Rule 5 draft (from Arizona Phil):

James Adduci, OF

Alberto Alburquerque, RHP

Mitch Atkins, RHP

Matt Avery, RHP

Justin Berg, RHP

Todd Blackford, RHP

Russ Canzler, 1B

Yusuf Carter, OF

Rafael Dolis, RHP

Darin Downs, LHP

Jesse Estrada, RHP

Ryan Harvey, OF

Jim Henderson, RHP

Mark Holliman, RHP

Grant Johnson, RHP

Marcos Mateo, RHP

J. R. Mathes, LHP

Casey McGehee, 3B-C

Mario Mercedes, C

Jonathan Mota, INF

Jake Muyco, RHP

Mike Phelps, RHP

Jose Pina, RHP

Mark Reed, C

Kyle Reynolds, 3B

Tony Richie, C

Chris Robinson, C

Jayson Ruhlman, LHP

Alvaro Sosa, C

Nate Spears, 2B

Donald Veal, LHP

These players are eligible to be a free agent after the season (again, from Arizona Phil):

Andres Blanco, SS

Mike Burns, RHP

Edward Campusano, LHP

Robinson Chirinos, INF

Rafael Cova, RHP

Matt Craig, 1B

Doug Deeds, OF-1B

Luis Figueroa, INF

Dumas Garcia, RHP

Koyie Hill, C

Randy Keisler, LHP

Geoffrey Jones, LHP

Josh Kroeger, OF

Cesar Salazar, OF

Bobby Scales, IF-OF

Andres Torres, OF

Tanner Watson, RHP

Randy Wells, RHP

To clarify Raisin's post: If a player is rostered they then begin their major league service, and are not eligible to be a free agent until they serve their 6 years in the majors. Hoffpauir cannot be a free agent next year, and if they'd like to keep any of those guys they can roster them. (Maybe Kroeger or Wells)

Veal's the only guy certain to be rostered on that list.

Mitch Atkins, RHP

Jake Muyco, RHP

Mark Reed, C

Donald Veal, LHP

Matt Craig, 1B

Micah Hoffpauir, 1B

Josh Kroeger, OF

Randy Wells, RHP

these are probably the only interesting names on the list. someone (atkins/veal) should be protected and harben should be removed. i don't think reed is close enough to the majors to be selected. muyco is interesting just because he hasn't pitched much; i have a hard time seeing a team take a shot at him unless he is great the rest of the way.

craig, hoffpauir and kroeger are basically backup guys and maybe a team lacking in an extra IF/OF would take a shot at them.

Veal and Atkins are the only ones really worth holding on to. Theyd be grabbed up in a minute if left out there.

As for Hoff, Id say keep him if they plan on giving him Daryl Wards role for next season. Otherwise, let someone else have him who could potentially give him a better chance.

Well, that list is clearly old since Hoffpauir is on the 40-man. I'll edit his name out and see if anyone else should be scratched.

ETA: Also took out a couple guys who the Cubs cut during the season. Thanks for the heads up, SSR.

Wasn't Walrond released as well? Also, does Chad Fox still belong on that list since he's now on the 40-man roster (albeit on the DL)?

Note: I'm talking about the free agent list, not Rule 5.

Fox doesn't belong on the list, you're right NCCF. Good catches (I'm clearly not doing a good job when I actually read the list).

As things stand today, only Veal and Atkins need to be protected from the rule 5 draft IMHO - there's little chance any of the others would be taken, and even less chance they would stick on a 25 man roster for a full season in 2009.

That doesnt mean someone wont give him a look. He is a former top 10 pick, and a rule 5 doesnt involve a lot of commitment. Your basically inviting him to ST, and if it doesnt work out, he goes back to Daytona.

It costs money, and there won't be any real significant players worth that gamble once Veal and Atkins are protected. If I was a major league team, I'd be shopping at Florida, who has received umpteen thousand prospects via trade over the last few years. They can't protect all of them.

Don't forget that anybody selected in the Rule 5 draft must be on that team's 25 man roster for an entire season if they want to keep him. That team also has to pay $50,000.

Any player selected must also be added to the 40 man roster from day one, which means there must be room to do so.

A team with a full 40 man roster cannot select anyone in the rule 5 draft (major league part).

it very much means someone won't give him a look
