According to the East Valley Tribune, the Diamondbacks have initiated trade talks with the Mariners concerning outfielder Raul Ibanez.

Ibanez would be a great replacement for Eric Byrnes, who's expected to be out for the rest of the season. But the M's asking price is apparently pretty steep at the moment. They're eying pitchers Max Scherzer and Jarrod Parker, along with second baseman Emilio Bonifacio and outfielder Gerardo Parra. The D-Backs won't give up either pitchers and have big plans for Bonifacio, especially with current 2B Orlando Hudson in a contract year. We'll keep you updated on any further developments.

What are the M's smoking?

Everyone is going to be asking for the moon this early. The prices may come down some as the deadline gets closer, but for a team like the Mariners, there's no incentive to move a player early unless the price is something they know they can't any better.

I doubt the Mariners get anything close to Parker or Scherzer for Ibanez, but there's no reason to deal him yet. Right now, they can hope the Dbacks panic and give in. As the deadline gets closer, they might get more reasonable in their asking price.

I think asking for so much now is just a diplomatic way of saying they're going to wait and see what offers they get from other teams.

What about the incentive that they suck to high heaven and need to start doing something about their baseball team? I know, I know -- doesn't mean much in terms of the deadline. If you reek now, may as well reek for another couple weeks.

The reason for the M's to negotiate in good faith now is that the DBacks could just go get a replacement from somebody else between now and the end of July.

That potentially leaves the M's holding the bag... or at a minimum selling to a smaller pool of interested teams.

Seeing the Indians and A's finding deals to their liking, and taking them without any further messing around has been quite refreshing, especially on the heels of the Santana and Roberts fiascos.
