Yeah, I knew he was a Cub, but wasn't sure if it should go there. It always made me a little sad that he missed the '77 and '78 championships. Cubs traded him back to NY in '79 and I will never forget the Thurman Munson game!

I missed the Cubs Post-game today. I wondered if Lou had heard.

i saw a thing on 60 minutes about him... they were doing some experimental brain cancer treatments i think. as wonderful as modern medicine is, sometimes there are things that cannot be healed. from all accounts he was a good guy, and i wish his family and friends the best.

He may have been best known for the trade to the Giants for Bobby Bonds, which was considered a blockbuster at the time. Two players who were good but considered by some to be disappointments because they failed to live up to unrealistic expectations (Murcer was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle; Bonds the next Willie Mays). And both playrs in that trade eventually played for the Cubs (as well as both dying prematurely with brain tumors).

Along with Rick Monday, one of my favorite Cubs of the 70s. Brenly did talk to Lou about it on the Lead-Off Man today.

There was also mention of it on the Futures Game telecast, especially while interviewing Brian Cashman and Tino Martinez.

He was a great guy and a great Cub (at the time). I'll remember him fondly as one of my favorite lefties in that era. . .Rick Monday, Bobby Murcer and Bill Buckner (oh, and Larry Biittner). I didn't have much to look up to during that time.

Bobby Ray Murcer...the battles I used to have with my Yankee friends saying he sucked and then he ends up on the Cubs, I never heard the end of it. I have a lot of wonderful memories of him and my prayers are sent to his family and friends.
