You don't think there's more surface area with a glove to stop a ball?

Plus, we've all seen foul balls deflected after hitting a few upstretched bare hands. I really don't want to be in the path of a hard hit ball after it was deflected by a guy two rows in front of me, but if I am in the path I definitely want a glove.

IMO, if you're reasonably facile with a glove and you are sitting along the foul lines, I see nothing wrong or embarrassing at all in bringing it. You are decreasing the risk to you and those around/behind you who might not be paying enough attention, or do not want to deal with a foul ball coming their way.

After it's deflected, it's not as dangerous. I want the glove for the balls that are smoked right at me. If someone else wants to be a tough guy and barehand screamers, that's their prerogative.

If I am in the bleachers or way up in the terrace or mezz, I don't bring one. I am talking about right down the lines, from the dugout up.

there has yet to be a convincing argument about why adults can't have gloves

yeah, and your argument comparing fans with gloves to players with gloves was air tight.

about as airtight as "every adult with a glove is a mouth-breather who just wants autographs and will steal balls from kids"

i just can't imagine going through the hassle of lugging around a glove to catch a foul ball because a) who wants to carry a glove around a ballpark all day? and b) who wants a foul ball?

since you're defending glove wearers, i'm guessing you bring your glove to the ballpark...so why do you do it?

To protect young kids from getting hit in the head with a line drive and suffering a fractured skull?

Actually, I've never brought one with me just because it's a hassle. Now that I have a kid though, I'm brining one with me every time once he's old enough to go with me.

if you don't care about looking like a dork and are afraid of getting hurt, why don't you take a freaking shield or something that would actually be useful? if i were legitimately frightened about my safety because i had such awesome seats, a stupid glove would not be first on my list of things i would bring to protect myself.

Um, because a glove serves that purpose, and is a lot more practical than a freaking shield, maybe. If I am there, I will be paying attention, and common sense tells you that it's a lot less painful to catch screaming liners with a glove than with a bare hand.

I don't know about you, but I do not consider anyone who brings a glove to a game to be a dork (unless they're in the upper deck or 20 rows deep in the bleachers). Maybe it's an insecurity thing.

I'll probably open up a whole separate can of worms with these comments, but whatever.

I've never even seen the point in taking young children to games. 8-9/10 kids are going to get bored and are going to be miserable (and complaining) and will just want to leave early at some point. Most young children just don't have the attention span to sit and watch a baseball game.

Kids that aren't old enough to have these emotions make even less sense. Can these parents not find a babysitter or something? Why are you taking an infant to a baseball game?

On top of all this, if you're sitting in certain areas, it's dangerous to them, too.

Personally, I didn't go to a game until I was 10, and even then I didn't appreciate it all that much. I was about 12 when I actually started enjoying going to games. Maybe I'm the exception rather than the rule, though, who knows.

I agree, to a point. I genuinely enjoyed going to ballgames from the age of about 7-8 on. There is no way I would take an infant to a big sporting event.

where the hell are you people sitting??? and wherever it is, sit someplace else if you have kids that can't protect themselves.

who exactly are we trying to impress by catching balls with our bare hands?

and for what it's worth, I maybe take my glove to 20% of the games I go to

no, I usually don't take the kids. a 5 and 2 year old tend to get bored after about 1/2 an inning

I went to my first Cubs game at 7 and sat in the 2nd row behind the Mets dugout. I loved every minute of it and can still remember yelling to Strawberry as he went into the dugout (got him to look up and my mom took his picture). Maybe I'm the exception, but I'm really glad my parents took me to a game that young.

But to your point, I have a young son and my parents have wanted to take him to a game since he was 1. We went to our first college football game last fall and he loved it. Then he fell asleep in the 2nd quarter and we left in the 3rd quarter. I don't have a problem with people taking kids to a game and then leaving early if they get bored/tired. If they're over the age of 5 they'll probably remember (or "remember" upon seeing pictures) and it'll be a cool memory. And if they leave early, why do you care? I can't understand why this would be so bothersome. I get annoyed sitting by young kids at certain things, but it's not like I need total peace to watch baseball at a stadium. I'd rather have the annoying 8 year old for a few innings than the guy that swears all the time or talks like he know everything but actually makes everyone around him a little dumber.

I used to have season tickets for the local Short-A minor league team. My seats were 3 rows behind the 3rd base dugout, so a lot of foul balls (both liners and pop ups) headed our way.

Again, I hardly bring one anymore, I just don't understand why someone shouldn't. The only reason I've heard is "it's not impressive to catch a ball with a glove" and "because it's dumb"

i guess my reason would be because it's not a very...i don't know, "grown up" thing to do? i mean, if you want you can put a quarter in those rides outside of the grocery store and ride them when you're 33 years old you can, and i guess my reasoning for why you shouldn't would be something along the lines of "because it's dumb." so if you're looking for something beyond that, i don't know what to tell you.

it just seems like an odd thing for a grown up to do simply because i find it strange that a grown up would care about getting a foul ball.

that said, the people who are catching the foul ball with their bare hands are still catching a foul ball, so how are they any better (per your P.O.V.?)

well if a ball is flying towards you, obviously your natural instinct is to catch it. i guess you could duck and cower in fear.

I was going to ask if you had kids or not, but that answers it. Wait until you have kids and they continually ask you if they can go to see the game live. From age 5 and on my kids have loved to go to the games. You wouldn't believe how well kids can sit and watch a game, when they want to go. Its also exciting on those rare occassion when they get to interact with the players and take home a souvenier.

As a side note though, we usually try to get seats either behind the net or in an area where we don't have to worry as much about line drives or broken bats.
