Am I the only one that thinks his defense is a bit overrated? It seems like a ton of balls go over his head, he always seems scared of the wall even when he's not close, and at least twice in the past week he's turned singles into doubles/triples by taking a bad route to the ball and having it get by him. I mean, he's a good defender, but is he as good as everyone makes him out to be? I'm not so sure.

You gotta remember that most of the time it's his first go-around at that stadium. Different dimensions, different fields.

I still think he's a very good outfielder, but let him get his feet underneath him first. This is only his 3rd going on 4th month of his first season in the Majors.

Derrek Lee is tied for 3rd place among all first basemen in baseball in errors this year with 7 (two behind the leader Prince Fielder who has 9)

He's clearly not as good as everyone talks about either.

Why are you using errors to determine how good a defender is?

It's not perfect obviously but someone who is close to leading the league in errors for his position isn't having too good of a season. Lee has been good but to his normal level so far.

I don't that's really true at all. All that means is he's botched a few routine plays. Routine plays don't make a defender great. The things that make Lee a great defender have still been there all season.

Errors also could mean a defender botched a tough play that he made look easy. Perhaps an infielder has very good range and gets to a lot more balls than other defenders, so he gets more chances to botch plays.

:ninja: :this: :beee: I don't understand these

first one is for when you are alluding to something or making a clever pun, second is supposed to be for what he said but it doesn't really work, third is for refusing to see someones point or feeling you are above something

I realize this but the mistakes Lee has made haven't for the most part been that type. And please look at what I actually said. I said he is having a worse year than normal and that is certainly the case. He still has the great range but has been messing up on others more than before.

His defense has been outstanding. He gets to a ton of balls and has a fine arm.

He is outstanding on playing balls off the wall. Almost uncanny good.

I'm not, but explain to me how that's different than you saying that because Kosuke has botched a couple plays he isn't a great defender.

I think it's OK especially with him being new to the league. And when you compare him to Edmonds with his bum foot and the circus in left lately, he looks REALLY good!

The biggest negative I've noticed with his defense is that he takes bad angles to line drives that are rolling in the outfield. I believe most Japanese surfaces are astroturf though so it may just be an adjustment.
