i miss hall jr. already. not his inability to beat popov and then vandenhoogenhoogenloogen but his trash talk.

 

i couldn't stand gary hall. basically all he did was sit around and get high for 3 years, then start training for a few months, get in the pool and make the olympic team. actually i don't like sprinters in general - they're often cocky meatheads who don't work half as hard as everyone else in the pool - but hall was even worse than most.

i'm not really sure who said that, but they're dumb. in terms of dominance, phelps' events probably rank:

 

200 fly

400 IM

200 free (rest of the world is pretty weak in this right now)

200 IM (still, phelps has most of the top times in history here, but lochte is a threat)

100 fly

 

anyway, this is what he did in melbourne last year - nobody really cared then, because it's swimming that's not in the olympics, but phelps was blowing away his own records left and right, many of them by more than a second. he was more than a body length ahead of the WR line in the 200 fly - and that's a race that takes less than 2 minutes! in melbourne he would've won 8 golds if one of the relay swimmers in the prelims hadn't jumped in his leg and DQ'ed the u.s.

it seems like kobe's trying to do to much. i've seen too many unnecessary passes, and saving the ball under the other teams basket is never a good idea at any level.

yeah, usually there will be a couple of "stars" who sit out the prelim heat - this morning, jason lezak and phelps did not swim in the prelim - and then come in for the finals. if they win a gold medal, everyone in the prelim and the final gets a gold medal.

 

for the northwestern folks, matt grevers temporarily owns a world record (as part of the 400 free relay in prelims) and an olympic record (100 back). those won't be records for long, but it has to be a cool feeling anyway.
