so this rule where the swimmers who qualify in the prelims (for relay events) can be switched around for the final is kinda BS

Japanese guy took a nasty fall on the rings while setting up his dismount. One ring shot out of his hand like a bullet leading to his hard flipping fall.

Michael Phelps is a damn beast. He can't be human.

Will he compete in London in 2012? He could theoretically end up with 20 gold medals in his career after those games. That's mind blowing!

Stephen Strasburg is so sick. Wait till the best college pitcher since Prior hype comes, and it will be warranted.

He said he's going to compete in London though I think he said it wouldn't be a full program like in Athens and Beijing.

But not completely. He just needed a good bowl of soup and a chance run-in with Tobias Funke for a comeback. :D

I wouldn't say the plot thickens. Basically everyone knows they aren't 16, but the accepted form of proof was provided. So even if it was falsified, it doesn't matter.

If your government says you are a certain age, then for all practical purposes you become that age -- even if in reality you aren't.

For example, if your government says you are 21 years old, when in reality you are 18, then you can go out and drink.

I never post here, just read from work mostly, but this age controversy really makes me mad. I think a good enough indication is that when I watch the olympics with anyone, we try to guess gymnasts ages and everyone on the Chinese team looks 12-15 years old. I know that China "breeds" gymnasts, so a 4'9" girl that weighs less than 70 lbs, however atypical that may be, might be probable. But can she really be under 16? I went to school with a lot of asian girls and this is so extreme it blows my mind.

I can't believe I stayed up until 1:30 last night watching the men's all around. Every time someone was positioned for the silver medal they fell. It was kinda crazy. The French guy who won bronze was a complete wreck when the final standings were posted; he as given a 0% chance of medaling in this meet.

there's this one guy on the argentine team that just looks abnormal. i mean, something about him is just off. part of it is that he's foreign, so he's just weird based on that, but the other part is that he looks like some sort of arrogant foreign a-hole, so i couldn't leave it simply at that. i had to find out what was so bizarre about this guy, why did he bother me? and then i found out what his name was, and it was fabricio raul jesus oberto and then i was like: "ohhhhhhhhhhhh."

Truffle, are Phelps and Co. doing any weight lifting? How about the university swim teams? What's a typical plan?

Back in the mid- to late-80's when I was swimming competitively it was still frowned upon as something that would "tighten up your muscles and slow you down."

there was still some of that when i swam, but most college teams and top swimmers lift weights. i believe i heard during these games that phelps started lifting within the last year or so. i had my best year of swimming in college when i lifted 2-3 times a week. Then my best friend on the team quit, and he was the one who got me to start lifting, so I pretty much stopped as well. I didn't really put it together until after I was done swimming in college, that the lifting was the biggest reason I improved so much. you need to do the right KIND of lifting, and you don't want to get too big, but gaining some strength is vital.

in other news, rowdy gaines just made reference to his "beloved chicago cubs."

also, katie hoff nor kate ziegler - who were considered the top two distance freestyle swimmers in the world last year - both missed the finals for the 800 free #-o

That was really cool though. I mean, I love it when Phelps wins his races as expected, but its great to see someone win when given no shot. That's also why the 4x100 freestyle relay was incredible.

By the way, that Japanese guy (Tomita) falling was terrifying when they showed it again in slow motion.
