Balfour got the win tonight. He must have been awesome.

was he the guy who loaded the bases and hit 2 guys or the 1 who gave up the grand slam? Wait, those were our guys.

They really need to do something about the way they judge wins. It makes no sense that a starter needs to go 5 full to qualify for a win, but a reliever can get it with less than 1.

I really don't care about beating the Sox any more than another team on the schedule, despite the minor annoyances of their fans paying far too much attention to us.

I'm all paranoid now. If this is what happens to Marmol after 4 days off, what else can happen? Is Woody next? Are we destined to see Kerry load the bases on two walks and a HBP in the 9th tomorrow?

:(

Someone talk me down from the ledge.

Just got back from the game. What an embarrassing series.

We knew before Marmol even came in that he was wild as hell. We were watching him warm up and he was all over the place, like not even coming close. I don't know if you could see it on TV, but there were at least 2 throws of his that got away from the catcher and went down the line.

It's a terrible series but this team needs to buck up and put it behind them. We're 3.5 games up, and in all honesty we're REALLY 5.5 games up because the Cards are probably not going to be there anyway.

We just need to forget this and win the Sox series. Everything will be just ducky by Sunday if we beat them 2/3.

I assume we're attributing Marmol's bad outing to Lou destroying his arm, right?

Pretty much split down into 3 different categories, actually:

1) Overuse

2) Marmol isn't sharp when he isn't used much, especially when he has several days off before an outing.

3) It simply was going to come eventually. Marmol is a guy with nasty stuff, and has had control problems in the past. 1 or 2 times he's not going to be able to locate either of his pitches and just absolutely blow up.

I've seen people with all 3 interpretations. I tend to believe number 3, although I'm open to both of the others being contributing factors.

If it was a full month or two from now, fine, overuse would make more sense, but June isn't even done. He's been used a lot, but if this that "broke" him already...come on. And to just suddenly break down like that with the season not even halfway over? If that's the case, he was an injury wating to happen no matter what.

I'm inclined to think, ironically, that it was the excessive rest. He's already shown that he's rusty coming into games where he's had a couple days or more off in between appearances.
