That's a pretty dumb use of the DH... we need to stick the biggest bat we have who doesn't start in that slot.

Against LHP, the biggest bat is either Blanco or Cedeno. There's not a huge difference between them, not enough to outweigh the benefit of resting Soto's legs at least, especially considering Cedeno's reverse split.

You shouldn't look at it as using the DH to get Blanco a start. It's using the DH to get Soto a start on what would be a rest day. Soto can't play 162. This gives him an off day without losing his bat.

you can't change who the DH is during the course of a game?

No when you move the DH to the field you can't make someone else the DH.

huh. what if the DH gets hurt? can someone off your bench become the DH?

Yes, you can pinch hit for the DH as much as you want. None of those guys can go in the field though, or whoever they replace will have the pitcher hit in their spot.

Not a single, solitary one IMO. I expect Soriano to get 75% of the starts there and Hoff and Ward to split the rest

Neither of these guys are even on the roster right now, correct?

Correct. Somebody (probably Hoff) will be called up and a pitcher sent down to get back to 12 pitchers.

I still think Geo should be the DH. You can't plan your game around a 1/100 possibility.

I'd probably DH Geo, too. I'd give some thought to Soriano and Ramirez for a game or two each, as well (over all the Interleague games, not just the Toronto series).

Does the DH HAVE to automatically bat for the pitcher or could you have them bat for a position player? Not that I would want the Cubs to do this, but I'm just curious.

The DH has to bat for the pitcher I believe, but you can chose not to use the DH at all.

During last night's game, Lou was saying they'd bring up Hoff up for the Toronto series(after the 10 day waiting period). Ward will do rehab in AZ and then one of the minor league stops.

Does anyone think that Ward's recovery is taking longer than anticipated and they're hoping that Hoff can stick here.

I think they trust Hoffpauir enough to make sure that Ward is completely 100% before he comes back. From what I read now, he basically is at the level he was before the latest injury. His back is ok, but his leg still bothers him, so pretty much the only thing he could do is hit. They are sending him to Arizona to hopefully get his leg better so when he does come back, he's not so limited.

This is what Lou had to say about the DH:

"What I can do in these six games is use Micah a little bit at first base and DH Derrek Lee," Piniella said. "I can use Micah a little bit in left field and DH Alfonso Soriano. I can put [Mark] DeRosa at third a couple times and DH [Aramis] Ramirez if we want. So we can rotate our team around a little bit and rest some of our key players."

It looks like the Cubs will face 5 right-handers and 1 left-hander during these first 6 inter-league games (Kazmir being the one left-hander).

He didn't mention using the DH to get rest for the one position player that it would benefit most?

I'm thinking Lou will DH Soto and use Hank White as a catcher against one of the weaker pitchers. I don't think he trusts Blanco much with his bat, and will use him in a game when we figure to score a lot of runs anyway against a mediocre pitcher.
