Maybe Wolf can help us out on Sontag's defense. Did he play any CF?

24th rounder: RHP David Cales, St. Xavier (IL)

It doesn't look like Cales pitched this year. He's in the team photo though. Injury I guess? No link to his 2007 numbers, unfortunately.

Here's his freshman numbers at Mizzou(Scherzer left in there for funsies):

25th round: 1B Rebel Ridling, Oklahoma State

BA's 15th rated prospect from Oklahoma

Posted

Ridling can hit. He topped the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League last summer in average (.381), home runs (11) and RBIs (59), and that performance came on the heels of a productive .336-14-68 junior season at Oklahoma State. Despite his prowess at the plate, Ridling was not drafted last June—ostensibly because a six-figure price tag was deemed excessive and scared off teams. Ridling has good balance at the plate, stays back on balls exceptionally well and can turn on a fastball, though struggles with breaking balls. He has above-average power potential and homered three times in one game last summer. Strictly a first baseman at Oklahoma State, Ridling split his time between first and left field at Santa Barbara. Ridling’s outfield defense and arm strength are adequate, but he projects as a first baseman in pro ball.—ALLAN SIMPSON

UPDATE (5/15): Essentially the same player he was a year ago, Ridling virtually duplicated his junior season by hitting .325-18-65 (entering NCAA tournament play). He was still somewhat of a guess hitter who swung-and-missed often, especially at breaking balls, but he put a charge into pitches he could handle and showed raw power to all fields. He should be a solid organizational senior draft.—

Not so great with the plate discipline.

Boomer (Wrigleyville): Did those White Castle's stay down?!?! Thoughts on the Cubs draft?

Kevin Goldstein: They always do. Honestly? I was confused by it, in the sense that they started off with four college players. Flaherty seemed like an overdraft but if you wanted a true shortstop, maybe you had to. If Carpenter stays healthy (HUGE IF) that's more than a 3rd round arm.

So Goldstein thinks that Flaherty is a "true shortstop?" I thought most reports had his limited range as a reason why he'd have to move.

Cales was the closer at UIC in '07.

Gotta like the fact that he walked only one hitter in 36.1 innings.

Lunch break...I'll update the first post when I get back.

West Virginia’s Friday night starter, Whitlock continued to show impressive stuff with a fastball consistently in the low-90s, touching 93. He was again plagued this season by control/command issues, however, as he walked 47 and gave up 12 home in 93 innings while striking out 70. The result was an unimpressive 7-7, 5.69 record—a year after going a more respectable 7-5, 3.51

Fastball: Gray threw his fastball in the low 90s and touched 93 mph. It was hittable when he left it up in the zone.

Fastball movement: It wasn't completely straight; there was a little movement.

Curve: He showed a good breaking ball that was plus at times.

Slider: It really blends in with the curve to make one pitch. It's a power curve when he's throwing it right.

Changeup: He rarely showed a changeup in this outing.

Control: He was around the plate with all of his stuff.

Poise: He was a good competitor on the mound.

Physical Description: Gray is a good, but undersized athletic right-hander.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: He's got a quick arm with good command and two decent offerings he can throw for strikes.

Weaknesses: Mostly his size. High school right-handers who are small always have to prove themselves more.

Summary: Those who saw Gray over the summer -- and liked him -- saw more or less the same pitcher near the start of his high school season. He'll have to make believers out of those who shy away from undersized righties, but Gray's fastball and breaking ball -- and his command of those two pitches -- might be very persuasive

If we actually manage to sign Gray, I'll be much happier with this draft.

It will require first round money. Very unlikely. but if we cough up a nice 5 mil bonus, then who knows.
