I've always found monthly splits as a fun way to see how our perceptions match reality. Here's how May went.

I'm worried about Soto, mostly because he was downright bad for the last two to two and a half weeks of May.

Actually look at the Cubs pitching as a whole for May.

Cubs rankings:

Hits: 17th

BB: 17th

K: 3rd

BAA: 6th

ERA: 3rd (3.30)

That's kind of bizarre to have a WHIP as high as the Cubs did and have the 3rd best ERA for the month.

Wow our Bullpen and top 2 starters were awesome. Our 3-5 starters and long reliever sucked.
Lieber's numbers are misleading because they include his one start. As a long reliever he's been very good.

And I'd venture to guess he'd be good as a starter given another chance. Replacing him after one start was just too knee-jerk. He'd be an improvement over Marquis.

would it kill Theriot to hit a gap every now and again? I have no problems with the rate in which he's getting on base, but I'd like to see him at 2nd every once in a while

It is frustrating, but I welcome a .750 OBP-driven OPS from him with open arms

Good baseball players do somtimes have bad 2-3 week stretches. It happens.

I was afraid they had figured Soto out after the Washington series. I was a lot more worried then than I am now. And let's face it, expecting him to OPS 1.000, (or even .900) all season isn't realistic.

I like how you put up Big Z's hitting numbers. Hell, put him at DH in the interleague games.

I look at that and this is what I see:

Soriano's OPS will regress down a bit, but if he has a hot week a month he should always be at least around a .900 OPS for the month.

I think DeRosa, Ramirez, Theriot and Soto will always be around those numbers.

Lee's obviously not going to be that bad.

I feel that Edmonds/Johnson will OPS around .750 each during their platoon.

We went 18-11 last month with our all-around best hitter OPS'ing under .700. As long as we avoid stretches with multiple players slumping, we should have no problem winning 15-18 games a month every month.

I disagree. I don't think it was a knee-jerk reaction, but rather recognition of how important he's been as a long reliever. As a starter he'd probably only be able to go five most of the time, resulting in taxing the bullpen every fifth game. I think he's right where he can help the Cubs the most.
