Yeah, Phil is the man where I live. He went to Patrick Henry High, which is where our kids currently go. A lot of the people I am friends with here went to school with Phil.

Phil's mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer too. Talk about a rough couple of months.

I really dislike Phil Mickleson, but from a life standpoint this is just awful. I can't imagine having this happen to me, and hope his family gets healthy.

How can someone not like Phil Mickelson? He's the Jimi Hendrix of golf. Jimi was left handed and learned to play a right handed guitar upside down.

Phil is right handed and golfs left handed because he would destroy the field if he actually played right handed.

I hate watching lefties play golf. It looks so unnatural to me. Lefty batters don't bother me the same way though...I don't know why.

Are obviously much, much more prevalent. In other news, I still can't hit a driver to save my life but I hit my irons like a rockstar. I've been driving a 3 iron slightly teed up off the box in the 225-240 range and without using a wood all round I broke 100 for the first time ever.

Buy yourself 2-3 lessons from a pro. You'll shoot 85 with a couple of minor corrections. I just took a couple and with a couple of very minor adjustments and a few teaching points, I'm hitting the ball much better and scoring much better.

Most of the golf pro's i have spoken to love left handed swings over right handed, just saying its a nice swing. Don't know why, just what I have heard. Heard the same in baseball too though.

It's hard for me to put into words. Just one of those athletes I don't like. Plus I hate lefty golfers, watching them swing makes me want to vomit.

Fair enough. I like that he's kind of a blue collar golfer. He doesn't really seem like a robot like a lot of the other golfers. Phil is in the bushes, hitting trees, he's in the lake. He's hitting an upside down golf club opposite handed to get back to the fairway and he's taking drops where most golfers would never find themselves in the first place. Phil is a lot like me in that part of his game. I can be in the trees and bushes and lakes and taking drops because I have no idea where my stupid ball is. Unfortunately, I don't have the scrambling ability that Phil has. I don't have the ability to turn a hole with a lost ball into a birdie.

With Tiger, you are expecting a perfect drive, followed by the perfect shot to the green on the 2nd, and then to nail the 15 footer like it was a 3 footer, circle your score on the score card and grab your driver on the way to the next hole like we all do when we play his video game.

Phil chokes on occasion, making him seem a whole lot more real to the typical golfer. It doesn't matter if Phil practices more than any other golfer, you can still expect him to put his next drive in the deepest cut of rough on the course, if not completely out of bounds. Since I have probably made 3 times as many second shots from the first cut of rough or worse than from the fairway, it's a part of the game I enjoy watching someone else excel at.

I still remember Phil taking 3-4 shots to try to get up a hill, but it kept landing near the top and rolling right back to his feet...was it last years US Open I think?

Yep, right in his own backyard. Torrey Pines.

I don't follow golf very closely but I had heard stories that Phil Mickelson was a raging d-bag. Am I wrong? I had heard he was arrogant, pompous, and a jerk to a ton of fans.

I don't know him personally, but not only did he completely eat up the attention at the US Open with the utmost class, but the crowd sure seemed to enjoy giving him their support. He touched hands with just about everyone who extended theirs as he went from one green to the next tee box on every hole.

Granted, most of the attention was for his wife and her upcoming breast cancer surgery, but it was pretty apparent that the fans all wanted to see him win the event as well. They definitely enjoyed how well he played.

He has the reputation of a silver spoon boarding school brat for some reason, even though that's not really accurate at all.

I was always under the impression that it stemmed from the fact that he looked like a total preppy, especially in his early years. I guess that's true of most golfers but he just had that rich kid look.

I've always been a big fan of Phil.

The only thing Phil was missing was a preppy name like Davis Love III. \:D/

I'm trying to get outside my comfort zone and play some new courses. However my wallet won't allow me to play the best public tracks. Anyways I am looking for some suggestions that are moderatly priced in the Western Suburbs. Also I am moving to St. Louis next month, so if anyone has any suggestions of where to play down there I would love to hear them.

I have played off and on since I was about 15 (so 15 years), but finally started with some formal lessons yesterday. After an hour, I have a completely different grip and swing and am already seeing results. Unbelievable.

The Open will NOT be in HD this weekend.

http://blogs.golf.com/presstent/2009/07/dont-blame-abc-for-no-hd-broadcast-of-british-open.html?eref=sihpT1

Basically ABC and TNT have to use the BBC feed, and the BBC is only broadcasting in standard def.

Well I won't be tuning in.

They'll still broadcast on the HD channel, just in SD..."upconverted" so that it will fill the screen.

even worse

I was really looking forward to seeing the drear and windblown 3-foot tall rough in HD. Oh well.

The biggest reason I never watch the Open is the most obvious one -- I already know what happened before it's broadcast.

I'm fairly certain they broadcast the tourny live. It ends in the early afternoon here.

Yep. And really it's only Carnoustie that's dreary looking, imo.
