How do I vote for pitchers / how are pitchers selected?

I tried to write-in marmol but I can only vote for position players...

The managers pick the pitchers.

Even MLB isn't dumb enough to use fan voting for pitchers.

Geovany Soto is dominating the all-star vote. And apparently Alfonso Soriano is a rookie.

NEW YORK (TICKER) —The Chicago Cubs stand to be well-represented at the 79th All-Star Game.

Rookies Geovany Soto, Kosuke Fukudome and Alfonso Soriano all are in line to start baseball’s Midsummer Classic after second returns of National Leauge All-Star voting were released Tuesday.

In his first full season in the majors, Soto has the lead among catchers with 594,309 votes. He leads by over 200,000 votes over Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves.

Soriano paces all outfielders with 635,013 votes. Fukudome is second with 552,287 votes, followed by Ken Griffey Jr. (490,597) of the Cincinnati Reds.

Led by their trio, the Cubs (37-21) have baseball’s best record.

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who leads the majors with 21 homers, is the overall leading vote-getter. The two-time All-Star has amassed 847,628, giving him more than a 500,000-vote lead over Mark DeRosa at his position.

I think we can all band together and get DeRosa in over Utley. Utley doesn't deserve to start.

We need to get Theriot into the game. It's going to be hard to get him up to #1 but at least getting him to #2 could lead to Hurdle putting him on the team.

Off the top of my head, there are at least 2-3 more deserving SS's in the NL.

Theriot is actually 3rd in OPS for NL SS, behind Reyes and Ramirez. He has a 70+ point advantage in OBP over the two guys right behind him. With defense it makes it closer, but as of now it wouldn't be an awful decision if he made the game.

ok, next time i'm a a ball park, tomorrow at great american ballpark(reds/cards) ill try to fill out a ballot

Geo is now up about 400,000 votes now, and Kosuke and Soriano have maintained their leads as well. Funny that the more Geo slumps, the bigger his lead gets.

A few Braves fans aren't happy that Soto is leading over McCann.

Time to crank it up, fellas!

Voting Update

Soto is running away with the catcher's spot. Fukudome and Soriano still top the OF. Lee is second among firstbasemen sitting about 400K behind Berkman. DeRosa is second at his postion but is about a million behind Utley. Ramirez is second at third, about 500K behind Chipper Jones. Theriot is third at SS, but only 150K behind Tejeda.

Let's work to keep Soto and Fukudome there. Lee and Ramriez are long shots, but I'm going to keep voting. And who's for trying to put the Riot in at SS????

You could actually push Theriot into the game with that small deficit. I think the other Cubs are pretty much locked in at this point, in or out.

I agree. I'm going to keep voting them on my ballot, but I'm adding Theriot to the push!

Soto, Soriano, Kosuke are all pretty much locks to be voted in as starters (Soriano obviously won't start too bad Edmonds has turned it on too late to be able to get there.

Lee is likely in as the backup 1b because Pujols is about 60,000 back and injured. Aramis should be in as a backup 3b with a 136,000 lead over third. DeRosa is definately the backup 2b as he has a 150,000 lead over third. The only one lagging is Theriot as he is 59,000 back of third.

So all we need to do is keep up our current production with a increase to Theriot. Also we should start voting for Edmonds a lot just to see if we can get him in the top 10 because that would be hilarious a player who sucked until a month to go before the game and wasn't even signed two months prior to voting ending places top 10 at OF.

So we got three starters and 2 or 3 other players in as backups almost definately. This is all without pitchers. I would say Wood makes it because the guy who leads the NL in saves has a 4.4 era. Lidge is definately in as he has 18 saves as well and a below 1.00 era. Wood is liklely the second and only other one just because he has the saves, a big name, and has been getting strikeouts which helps. Marmol I would think gets in as well. After that I think Zambrano could make it on name alone but so many SP in the NL are doing well and with the every team gets an all-star rule might not make it. Same with Demp.

So we have low balling it 5 all-stars, most likely 7 in my mind, and as many as 9 or 10.

Backup position players do not go by vote totals. The fans have no say other than the starters and then picking the 32nd man. The only way in for Theriot is if he wins the vote. DeRosa makes it if they need a 3rd 2nd baseman, but that's the only way.

I also believe Marmol is for sure out at this point.

Yes but finishing second gives them a good shot at making it. I agree there is no way DeRo makes it over Uggla but Rameriz is probably going to be picked over Wright and Lee could get it over Pujols

Um, why?

He's the best reliever in baseball

Setup men only get picked if they are either having an absolutely historic season, or if they are the only representative of their team. Setup men with over 2.00 ERA's on a team filled with All-Star candidates? I think it would be really hard for him to get picked. The only good thing for him is that there are so few dominant closers in the NL this year, who automatically get priority over setup guys.
