Peoria LHP Chris Siegfried was placed on the DL with a right oblique strain.

RHP Kevin Kreier was called up from extended spring training to replace him and will start today. Kreier was a 20th rounder in 2006 who got a $100,000 bonus (one of 11 guys including DFEs to get at least a 6-figures in that draft).

In unrelated news, Dutch sources seem to be very pleased with Dwayne Kemp's performance in EST - he's apparently hitting .344 after 12 games with one double, three triples and one HR.

Good to see Mitch Atkins continue his string of recent good starts.

AZ Phil at Fitch

  • Marcus Hatley threw 3.2 perfect innings before getting hit and being chased (3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 5 K/0 BB)
  • Mark Pawelek threw 2.2 scoreless (2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K/0 BB). That's I believe 8.2 consecutive scoreless innings, all with good control.
  • Matt Craig finished his rehab today and is headed back to the Smokies.
  • And just for Werner:
The Cubs added a third run in the bottom of the 3rd on a lead-off solo HR by Kemp that was hit over the LF fence and onto 8th Street. (For a guy who is maybe 5'6, Kemp is built like a Muscle Beach body builder).

Alberto Cabrera with even more control problems for Peoria...3 BB in 4 IP, he's given up 3 runs. He might be headed back to extended spring training soon for Mark Pawelek or Marcus Hatley if he doesn't shape up.

Peoria is down 3-2. Jovan Rosa his a solo HR and is suddenly slugging .500.

After a rocky start, Cabrera seemed to recover: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 9 FO-5 GO. Peoria loses game one 3-2.

Could a Bobby Brownlie big league debut be near? His K/BB ratio is nearly 1, but he put up a 2.83 ERA in 6 starts at AA and is now with Washington's AAA affiliate.

Adam Haren threw 3 hitless innings, giving up 2 unearned runs and walking 7 more. Wow. Daytona down 7-2 after 7.

Rough debut for Kreier. He threw 2 scoreless innings to open the game (with 3 K) but ended up surrendering two 2-run HRs in the third. His final line: 3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2 HR. Peoria down 7-4 after 5.

I can't believe Brownlie is still pitching.

It bothers me that there isn't much to get excited about when it comes to our minor league system right now.

yeah imagine if we had a 22-year old CF who hits .362 at AAA and plays fantastic defense

went to the Daytona game last night, they look terrible.

Harbin throws flat footed, no drive with his legs, all are. Never saw him hit 90 all night. walked the based loaded in the second and a error by Landsford llowed two in.

Thomas had trouble getting around on a fastball, none that hit 90 either.

Landsford had two errors and could have been charged with two more.

Carter is still at Daytona, may stay there forever.

No one looked as though they had the talent to move on, the game was slow, boring, no life, I guess the tone was set by harbin

Harben has been brutal this season; it's one thing to lose control coming back from TJS but more BB than IP is another. And if he's not even hitting 90, I wonder what the Cubs saw to add him to the 40-man roster.

There may not be a lot of hot prospects in the system at the moment, but OTOH, look who's at Iowa:

Rich Hill

Felix Pie

Sean Marshall

Matt Murton

et al

Don't ask me why he popped into my head yesterday. He's around 28 years old already, though.

That's probably true for most systems, no? Guys who have played and even had success in the Majors? Hill is probably not going to be down there that long anyway.
