The Padres are close to acquiring a relief pitcher in a trade. If the deal gets done Sunday, left-hander Joe Thatcher could be demoted to Triple-A. The Padres could have retained Rusch by optioning Thatcher, who is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a .357 opponents' batting average.

Towers acknowledged Saturday that the 2007 bullpen was deeper and better constructed than this year's relief corps, which has numbered at least three long relievers more often than not. The GM, heeding scouts such as Bochy, said he wants to give Black more relievers with "good stuff" in front of eighth-inning specialist Heath Bell.

Maybe i'm just making things up, but I thought I remembered the Pads being interested in some relievers of ours this offseason, no?

Red Sox Send Corey To Padres

This morning, Tom Krasovic noted that the Padres were close to acquiring a relief pitcher. That deal has now been finalized with the Pads obtaining Bryan Corey from the Red Sox for either cash or a player to be named later.

Corey, a right-hander who made seven appearances for the Sox this season, was DFA'd on April 30. He cleared waivers and accepted a demotion to AAA.

This is Corey's second stint in the Padres organization. Corey, 34, has appeared in parts of five seasons with four different major league teams.

Marmol + Theriot for Greene

As things stand, I would never trade Marmol. Ever.

that's a little excessive, but some people here continue to undervalue marmol on the principle that he's "just a reliever." marmol was fourth on the cubs' pitching staff in VORP last season and second this season. he's #2 in baseball in relievers' WXRL this year and #19 last season despite spending a about a quarter of the year in iowa. trade him away and you're losing a LOT.

That sounds like a pretty bad trade for the Cubs - plus Greene isn't leaving the West Coast, right?

It's the opposite, actually. Greene wants to be on the East Coast to be very close to his family.

Some people on this board believe this kid, Marmol, could still end up at the front end of the rotation, if the Cubs could find his replacement in the pen. So to possibly trade a guy who is your most important pitcher---not name Zambrano----for a SS is not a good use of resources. Cedeno can more the put up similar numbers to Greene, and Ronny is already in the org. Trading Marmol for Greene doesn't make any sense.
