Rotation- 4 man to avoid anyone going on short rest

Zambrano

Harden

Dempster

Lilliy

BP- 7 which allows for an extra position player, possibly a RH hitter with some power.

Wood

Marmol

Simardzilla

Cotts

Marshall

Guzman- Piniella will want another power arm

Gaudin

The X factor is Jon Lieber. Did Hendry promise him a playoff spot in exchange for his "Foot injury?" He'd replace Guzman or Gaudin unless someone else is hurt.

where did you hear/read that?

Jon Lieber won't be the first guy to, shall we say, "exaggerate", an injury in order to help the team by creating a space on the 25 man roster. Of course the Cubs, like every other team, aren't going to public with this.

Still, I suppose it is possible that Lieber actually was hurt at the exact moment when it was particularly convenient for the Cubs.

The odd circumstances of his injury aside, I don't think Lieber was in the Cubs postseason roster plans unless something bad happened.

Lieber being on the postseason roster itself would be something bad. :)

I agree but Hendry likes to think of himself as a guy who does right by his vets (McGriff chasing a meaningless record instead of Choi learning to hit) so its not impossible even though unlikely.

I'll be the party pooper, but oh well.

What has Guzman done to be worthy of a postseason roster spot? I'm as happy as the next guy that he is recovering well, but he has always been alittle more hype/potential than substance, at least at the ML level.

The hope is that he'll pitch well enough in relief in September that he'll be in the postseason bullpen instead of Howry.

maybe he will, but that is alot to hope for from a guy who's been out of action for a year and a history of arm troubles.

I don't know if it's that much to hope for. Essentially people hope he pitches better than Howry has been pitching. His rehab progress suggests he may be able to do that, and Howry isn't exactly providing a difficult threshold.

Lieber in place of Guzman? Most likely not.

Lieber in place of Gaudin? Not in a million years.

If Guzman would replace Howry, we'd have a bullpen of 100% converted starters.

There aren't very many relievers that aren't converted starters if you count guys like Samardzija who never started in the majors.

Pretty much anyone but Howry for me, thank you. I couldn't watch the game the other day, the first game against the Nationals. When I heard the bullpen gave up a ton, I figured Howry was in the mix somewhere..... wrong, but still, you have to figure he was when you don't know any better.

Howry was. The others were worse, but he still let them score in his one inning of work.

Guzman had his first (of two) relief appearances yesterday:

2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 GO-2 FO, 37 pitches (27 strikes).

UBlink was at the game and said this in the minor league forum:

Was at the game last night - Guzman looked really good. FB was 94-96, got one SO on a nasty 91 slider. Also dropped a 79 curve in for a strike on the other eventual SO victim.

2IP / 0 hits / 0 ER / 5 Ks / 1 BB

39 pitches - 27 strikes

Angel -- your seat @ the table is ready!

Oh snap. Look out, NL hitters, Angel Guzman wants a piece of the postseason pie and he may be willing to kidnap Howry and lock him in a closet to get there.

Anyone else see any irony with '03? Hendry said after the 03 WS was over that he would have called Guzman up late in the year and that he may have made a difference if he were healthy. It looks like he's finally going to get that late-season call to come up and contribute to a post season run afterall...

It would be so sick if Guzman gets called up, performs well in September and knocks Howry off the playoff roster. Well, just the getting back to the majors and pitching well would be good enough, the last item would be icing on the cake.

Of course, I'd be happy if just about anybody knocked Howry off the playoff roster.
