No amount of moving the goalposts will change the fact that this was a bad one.
First major league start of his career, with little notice, against the team with the best record in baseball, he pitches a shutout through 4 innings, and that's a BAD start? What planet are you from?

He didn't pitch a shutout through four, and on the planet I'm from, the fifth inning of a major-league baseball game also counts.

I'm willing to give him some credit for the fact that Fox let in inherited runners. Gallagher left the game with the bases loaded and one out, a situation that on average leads to 1.61 runs being scored, so I'll say Gallagher gave up 3.61 runs in 4 1/3 innings. That's an ERA of 7.50. There are no circumstances under which that can be called "good" outside of maybe Coors Field in a hurricane.

And I notice that people pointing out the circumstances don't ever mention that the wind was howling in as well. A 7.50 ERA with the wind blowing in? Never good.

There were encouraging signs, certainly, and I like that he's getting another start, but it wasn't good.

I'm in the camp that thinks it was not a good start, but that doesn't matter. Despite not being a great start (last minute conditions notwithstanding), he showed he's got the arm and the "stuff" to succeed at this level. This start only reinforced my excitement for him in the future regardless of what the final box score said.

Exactly. Arguing about whether or not it was a "good" start is pointless because no matter what the results he got were, he showed that he has the stuff to pitch in the major leagues.

the stuff, yes. my biggest concern with him is the command; his stuff isn't good enough to keep pitching from behind in the count and keep putting guys on base via the walk. he's only 22 and obviously has room to improve, but i worry that he will get hit hard until he tightens up his command.

I forgot about the first inning run. That aside I wasn't saying that it was a great start, just that it wasn't a bad start (like you said it was). Not everything is either good or bad; there's some middle ground, and I think that's where the start was.
