And he is only hitting 98 on the gun.

In the old days, you weren't a real closer unless you could throw at least 115 mph.

I hold everyone against the Juan Berenger standard, 103 MPH in RBI Baseball.

I bet he wanted to go into the game tonight with the 5 run lead because that's the only time he's any good.

I understand everyone's anxiety around woody, but Heck, he's been just fine so far.

If he gets injured, we'll hear lots of "I told you so." Fine.

At this point he has been a very respectable example of a closer.

move him to the rotation next year, marmol will want to close, eclusively, even though he's more valuable in his current role.

if you're moving one of them to the rotation, it should be marmol.

i still don't buy marmol in the rotation. his effectiveness in the pen is his ability to just let it fly for an inning. if he has to pace himself, his stuff isn't nearly as electric, and two pitches won't get him through a batting order 3 times

Look at his minor league success. He was very, very, very good as a starter.

sure, so was Pie. just saying that he's probably the best reliever in the game right now. no reason to rock that boat

Show me who will get batters out reliably like Marmol in the 8th inning, and I'll support a move to the rotation for him. It's not like Lou hasn't been trying to find someone else to help in that regard. Nobody on our current roster has been able to be as reliable in that role.

You understand we're talking about '09, right? Guys pop up and become good to great relievers all the time. Marmol and Wuertz are examples of this on our roster alone. Good to great starters do not come out of nowhere unless they're instructed by Dave Duncan, so it might be more efficient to use Marmol in the rotation.

And Marmol has a 3rd pitch, a changeup, that he doesn't need to use in the pen. It's not filthy, and still needs some refinement, but it's not as if he was a 2 pitch pitcher throughout the minors.

No, I didn't understand you were talking about '09

We better hire Dave Duncan just to be sure it works out

You've got it backwards. Keep Wood healthy in the pen, move Marmol to the rotation.

i think either way, it works. one of them will have to be in the rotation, because they both can't close. at least, so says conventional wisdom.
