kerry's peripherals are pretty damn impressive this season. i can't say that i was totally on the wood for closer bandwagon, because i feared that his command would be too spotty and the "he doesn't have it" outings too common, but he has been really good. hopefully he stays healthy and keeps pitching well... with everything he has been through and the kind of guy that he's reported to be off the field, he is certainly easy to root for.

Does that inlude the hit batters? If so, wow. If not...wow.

No it's 5 BB's (2 IB) and 5 HBP.

Still though, I posted some of his peripherals in today's game thread right at the end and he's been dominant anyway you slice it.

Of course, non-sham closers would be better, but we can't have one of them. [/sarcasm]

unless wood blows a save in the ninth inning of game seven of the world series... then we go find budhouse and tear him limb from limb

Knowing our luck as Cubs fans, he'll have saved 40 in a row giving up 3 runs in 45 appearances leading up to that game 7 WS blown save.

I'm not sure my heart can handle another situation like this. '84 killed my innocence. '03 almost killed me.

'84, game 4 - I can still see Lee Smith giving up that HR to popeye arms Steve Gravey, Henry Cotto climbing the fence in a vain effort to catch it - man, I hated Lee Smith. After that I knew it was over, sure the Cubs had an 3-0 lead in game 5 but, I knew it was over.

Just like I knew it was over after we blew it in the 8th inning of game 6 in the NLCS. Wood on the mound, not withstanding. You don't lose a game the way we did and come back and win....and we didn't. ](*,)

I gotta believe if Woody's the closer in a decisive NLCS or WS game, he's not going to let this happen again. He sucked in game 7 in '03. He knows it, he admitted it. You've got to believe a guy like Wood is going to destroy people if he gets the chance again. If he throws the ball like he did last night, no team in the league is scoring a run on him.

Wood has been improving and will continue to do so, coupling that with Marmol and an improving Howry/Erye will lead to a point where you can mail it in if the Cubs have the lead after 6. Crap like the last 2 games of the Pittsburgh series is going to be the anomaly rather than the norm.

The double play was incredibly shammy. Only a sham closer gets into that situation in the first place. And then a 3rd out flyball? No strikeouts? SHAM.

Just like Game 6.

After Kerry hit the 3-run homer in Game 7 and everyone was going ballistic, I knew they weren't going to win. I had that game on in the background but barely paid any attention to it. You just don't come back after a Game 6-type loss. You just don't.

kinda like how the astros, in 2005, didn't come back after pujols hit that 900 foot home run off of lidge with 2 outs in the 9th in game 6.

Yea.

Or....sometimes you do.

It's already an anomaly, already not the norm.
