  1. 1. Where is Carlos Marmol most valuable?

    • Current situation--dominant setup/fireman
      31
    • Closer--It's the 9th inning, dude
      3
    • Starting Pitcher--More innings=more dominance?
      11

Just want to see what the consensus is. What better time than after Wood blows a game. I vote for keeping him where he is. If he was the closer, he'd never get to pitch because of all of the clownbags in front of him blowing the games in the 7th and 8th.

Im going to say as a set up man, but if Wood keeps it up, we may not have a choice.

Still it makes me think of a former set up man we once had whose very name brings up fits of vomitting amongst Cubs fans. Still back in 2004, he was at the top of his game as one of baseballs top set up men, until, against his wishes, Dusty Baker moved him to closer, and hes never been the same since. Another career that bit the Dust at the hands of Dusty.

I cant imagine anyone wanting him as a starter. He wouldnt be able to exhibit nearly as much dominance. As a 1, 2 at most inning guy, he can put his best stuff into every pitch, but as a starter hed have to pace himself through 5-7 innings. If you could just take a lights out closer, and make him a light out starter, many a lights out closer would have long since become a starter.

I voted "current situation", but that's not exactly what I mean... I'm not alone in thinking that Lou doesn't always use Marmol properly. He is too often used in "non-high-leverage" situations. Closer is probably the last place to use him, IMO.

And there was a similar situation about a decade earlier with Mel Rojas. Very good setup man for the Expos. Signs huge deal to become Cubs' closer. Sucks big time as closer.

Mel Rojas had been the Expos closer for a couple years when the Cubs signed him. He had 30 saves in 1995 and 36 saves in 1996 before joining the Cubs.

Oops, you're right. He was a setup man for a few seasons before that. So he turned to crap simply as a result of switching teams, not switching roles.

He's most valuable being wasted in a blowout win so that he might be unavailable in a close game when really needed.

I was so excited when we signed Rojas. I thought for sure we had the closer spot sealed up for years after getting him.

Thinking about his collapse still makes me sad...

when the cubs are ahead 9-3, where's that option

For two whole innings, too.

One more inning and he would have had a save. I hope his agent called Lou and complained!
